CROPS AND WEATHER IN CASS
COUNTY.
The crop nrcspects in this county is
not as brighi as it was ten days ago;
thè continued drought has almost
ruined thè small oat crop, and has
hindered thè corn planting. The farm-
ers are well up with their work; in
fa et, they can not do much more until
they get rain. There will he a large
acreage of sweet potatoes and peanuts
planted in this county. A good acre-
age of corn has been, and more will be
planted.
The weather has been exceedingly
dry. On thè 14th it changed from very
warm to quite cooler, which resulted in
two light frosts, but no material dam-
age was done to fruit or crops of any
kind. Week closed warm and clear.
Report closes March 18.
Leon County.
Cotton acreage will be slightly re-
duced. Peanuts will be increased more
than 50 per cent. Corn acreage about
same as last year. Planting is late
and fears are generally entertained
that a good stand will not be secured
on account of dry weather. Sudan
grass "acreage will be increased, and
that of other forage stuffs about thè
same as last year. No rain during
week, nor for five previous weeks.
Freestone and Limestone.
Corn acreage normal; planting late
and dry weather may cause failure to
get a stand. Cotton acreage will prob-
ably depend upon whether corn gets
a stand.. If corn fails to germinate
cotton acreage will be increased. Pea-
nut acreage will be increased, and
other forage crops kept at normal.
Weather dry; no rain for six
Southwest Texas.
The drought throughout
Uvalde and contiguous counties
mains unbroken at this date, March
18 and a great many fields of oats are
. lost. Corn on well prepared land is
holding out well but will soon suffer.
Farms are well prepared and thè only
thing delaying work or crop develop-
ment is thè lack of moisture.
Gonzales County.
Oats are a failure. Of cultizated
land it appears that not more than
35 per cent will be planted. County is
suffering from drought; farmers out
of feed and buying all they use. No
gardens are possible.
Harris, Brazoria, Colorado, Waller and
uavaca.
Around Waller and Hempstead near-
ly all of thè corn crop has been plant-
ed and much of it is up and looking
well. Along thè Aransas Pass Rail-
road to Hallettsville much corn has
been planted, and in thè Wallis and
Simonton sections some cotton is up
and looking well. Wherever thè farm-
ers plowed early, before Christmas
there is no complaint of want of mois-
ture. At Sublime, Lavaca county,
truck, crops, especially radishes, are
doing well. Without rain there is no
complaint of lack of moisture. The
cotton acreage throughout this entire
section will be kept down to thè limit
of last year, substituting cowpeas, pea-
nuts, Sudan grass, melons and cucum-
bers for cotton. Rain, though not bad-
ly wanted would help things. The
Houston market is receiving an abund-
ance of fresh vegetables from thè sur-
rounding country. Fine strawberries
are coming in.
Johnson, Dallas and Tarrant
From Cleburne to Fort Worth, via
thè Santa Fe, less than one-half of thè
land was plowed in thè fall, about one-
fourth is stili unplowed and thè bai-
ance is in a very poor condition of pre-
paration on account of thè drought.
Grain looks poor—very poor—with
possibly three-fourths of thè fall oats
killed and spring oats suffering for
rain. The grain crops in Dallas coun-
ty are in about thè same condition-
Much of thè ground planted to corn
was plowed too soon after thè Janu-
ary rains, and what was planted now
promise poor stands without rain.
Land that was well prepared in thè
early fall is by far in thè better con-
dition.

possession and is coining that

•tions and thè spirit of thè age, thè only
thing that will prevent great corpora-
tions from entering thè agricultural
fields of industry is for thè farmers to
combine and eliminate all waste from
both thè method of production and of
marketing. Farming by corporations
would bring more evils to our nation
than would farming by peasantry, be-
cause in such event rural people will
become mere farm laborers and shore
tenants executing thè plans of thè
foreman. This condition would bring
thè contest between socialistic and
capitalista theories face to face
final conflict.—S. A. Lindsey.

Lo
The Situation.
The conditions reported for thè past
week by our field force but emphasize
suggestione made in last week’s News
Letter, as to what thè farmers should
do in thè event of continued dry weath-
er. In thè southern sections of thè
State there is time yet for thè next ten
days to plant on land as well prepared
for it as good rains will give, but in
thè western sections, thè north and
northwestern, it will be too late a
week hence to speculate on corn crops
even if a rain comes. The recourse
those sections should bave, and pre-
pared for, is thè sowing of all available
soil to thè feed crops, thè grain sor-
ghums, peanuts and thè like. The in-
clination will be to tura to cotton, but
that cannot be done without bringing
greater calamity than though thè
ground were left unsowed for thè next
year. This is a condition that presses
for attention on thè farmers.

Men may voluntarily elect to play no
part in thè control of thè affairs which
make up their daily fife, and to play no
part in thè working out of thè great
questions upon which thè prosperity
of their country, thè future of their
children, and thè welfare of thè race
depend; but they need not flatter
themselves that these things are mat-
ters apart from them, or that they are
leading free and independent lives. Ab-
stention is impossible under thè con-
ditions of modera fife and modera pop-
ular government. Men must either
govern or be governed ; they must take
part in thè control of their own lives,
or they must lead subject lives, help-
lessly dependent in thè little things
and great things of life upon thè will
and power of others.—Elihu Root.

ADVERTISE IN TEXAS
As a farmer and friend of thè man-
ufacturer and merchant I want to sug-
gest an “Advertise it in Texas” move-
ment. The manufacturer and jobber
may blow loud blasts on thè bora of
patriotism, but if they will put an “ad”
in thè newspapers in their trade terri-
tory, making a business presentation
of their goods, they will find it far
more effective than waving thè Star-
Spangled Banner. The farmer is as
much interested in thè price of thè
things he has to buy as in thè price
of thè things he has for sale, and thè
advertising columns of his newspaper
are his price list. The price is thè
thing, and thè farmer wants thè fig-
ures in cold type.
The press is thè most powerful agen-
cy for progress thè world has ever
produced. We bave all sorts of days
calculated to promote business and
honor industry such as Trades Days,
Bargain Days, Labor Day, etc., and
why not bave a press day, and all busi-
ness concerns advertise thè things
they bave to sell, and everybody sub-
scribe to thè locai paper and all de-
linquents pay a year in advance. There
is nothing so elevating in civilization
as thè smile of an editor and nothing
will contribute more toward thè wel-
fare of a community than thè prosperi-
ty of thè press.—Peter Radford.

Equitable enforcement of thè law
can never be made to rest upon thè
office-holders of thè land. It must
rest upon thè individuai. It cannot be
said that it is thè System of govern-
ment which is wrong- ti is thè unjust
use of thè System. It has not been thè
use, but thè misuse of thè powers of
government which has produced this
discontent in thè minds of men—Vice
President Marshall.
The business interests bave, during
thè past quarter of a century felt thè
influence of two powerful forces—reg-
ulation and publicity. While both
these agencies bave been misused,
they have made good, and I do not be-
lieve there are many honest men in
business who would withdraw them.
Their worth having been proved, I
would apply them to thè legai pro-
fession, as lawyers are public servants,
and have as much of a monopoly on
law as our transportation systems
have upon traffic. The lawyer has
been quite active in regulating busi-
ness, and is no doubt more capable of
working out thè details of regulating
his profession than a layman, but my
first impression is that all lawyers
.should be required to keep permanent
record of all their transactions, and
report annually to some department of
State thè name of all clients, compen-
sation received from such clients, and
thè character of Service rendered in
court or out, and thè place where ren-
dered, and that thè public and thè
..press be given access to these records.
