Some colored people were having
an argument about the twelve apos-

apostles were negroes. One colored
woman sayx:“I tell you the Apostle
Peter wasn’t no colored man."-“Why,
auntie, don’t you think the Apostle
Peter was a colored man ?” “Why,
don’t the Bible say that the rooster
crowed three times?” "Well, yes.”
"Well, if Peter had -of been a coTored

Miss Muriel Moore, nutrition work-
er here for the Red Cross, is going
to try to organize a clinic, to’’ in-
clude children from one to six years
old—in other words, children who
have not started to school. The pur-
pose of thi.4 clinic is to examine the
children, find out their defects, if
any, and, as far as possible, have
them corrected before the child en-
ters school. In thia manner‘he will
not be hampered by a condition that
might cause him to be backward in
his studies, or underweight.
In addition to the above, advice on
feeding children will be dispensed,
and literature touching on this all-
important subject will be given out.
It is very well that all children be
examined before they enter school,
for the old household, rhyme,
“A stitch in time
Saves nine,”
is still good doctrine, and ■ will be
ax long as time last£
The clinic will be held at the Fire-
men’s Cuib Rooms on Tuesday .after-
noon at 3 o’clock, and every mother
interested is not only invited, but
urged to attend. It is absolutely
FREE—no charge for anything.'
Any time you want to consult Miss
Moore on any subject with which she
has anything to do, phone her during
office hours at the Board 6f Trade of-
fice, 680.

Consider these reasons carefully. Each one is based on the
future prosperity and happiness of your family. ’
1st. You want a real home and you need to find your-
self and family the comforts arid conveniences that will enable
you to do your best work.
2nd. It is unwise to postpone home building or repairing f°r
possible lower building costs. Remember that lower costs, if they
should come, would probably find you less able to build or repair
than you are now.
3rd. Yndr home should be built or repaired before any of the
big luxuries like a car are purchased, otherwise the home is lively
never to be built. Building or repairing the home first makes it
easier to- buy and enjoy such luxuries.
4th. A home is the best possible basis for generous credit,
something that every family needs. These are oply a few of the
big reasons why you should build your home nohr, and thus pot
your future family life on the soundest possible basis.

Rex Beach, the author, is a pictur-
esque figure, he is not only a popular
writer, but he is a shrewd man of
businesses well. His wealth has
been estimated at a million dollars or
more. By peculiar co-incidence, both
London and Beach arrived in Alaska
at about the same time. It was dur-1
ing the gold rush of 1898.
Beach left a Chicago law office in!
answer to the call of gold and ad-
venture. He found both. But he!
found more than that—but was un-
aware of it at the time of the find-
ing. It was the background for such
novels ax “The Spoilers” winch
have ma^e him wealthy, and famous
the world over. The author of many
books, he has never surpassed or
equalled it.
Rex Beach feels that to write of
adventure one must first love it.
This he has done. And that is why I
his tales ring true. He lived close I
to the heart of the far north, and •
roughed it with the characters whbm
he later put into his book. A college
man, a lawyer by profession, he has
been a lumberjack,

“The Spoilers,” is in real life, a suc-
cessful business woman now. She I
first met Beach, at Nome in 1898 and
befriended him on numerous occas-
ions. Beach proved his gratitude by
making her the most humanly appeal-
ing character in all his books. He
was so fond of her ax a character
that he carried her through several
later novels.
Beach laid the foundation for his
success, not only as a novelist but as
a business man, in Alaska. He was
one of the few who “struck pay-dirt”
in that country. He landed in Seat-
tle some time later with nearly fifty
thousand dollars.
Eight years later, his great novel,
“The Spoilers,” was written. It
brought him instant recognition as a
first-class writer of adventure all
over the English-speaking world.
The book was a best seller for two
st aight years after its publication.
He has written several other novels
dealing with Alaska, notably “The j
