Miss Kate Armstrong, of Cor-
sicana, who had been the guest
of Mr. and Mrs. Ben S. Long, left
at noon Saturday to visit relatives
at Rowena a few days before re-
turning home.

City Marshall J. N. McKay,
ever on the alert to apprehend

caught a man in the act of steal-
ing a wagon sheet. He was ar-
rested and placed in jail. He ’
gave his name as M. M. Terry
jut said he was not related to
our R. A. Terry.
Travis Stewart, son of J.
Frank Stewart is at home from
Corpus Christi where he attend-
ed Peacock’s Summer School for
boys.
J. B. Perkins, of Avoyelles
Parish, La., came in at noon Sat-'
urday on a visit to his nephew,
H. S. Perkins and family.
J. 0. Roots and wife were
down from Miles last Friday to
attend the reunion.

cousin, Miss Brooks, of San An-
gelo, who were the guests of Mr.
and Mrs. J. Y. Pearce during
the reunion, left at noon Saturday
for their home.
Gatesville, Aug. 4.—Judge Ar-
nold granted a continuance of
Mrs. Minnie Lee Streight’s case
and set it for trial Feb. 8, 1912.
Mrs. Streight is charged with
the murder of her husband, for-
merly editor of the McGregor
Mirror. The case was first tried
in Waco and a sentence of life
imprisonment was assessed. On
appeal the case was reversed
and a new trial ordered. Subse-
quently a change of venue was
given to this county.
Owing to the sensational na-
ture of the case it has attracted
a great deal of attention.

Early recevied A phone message
this morning telling of a killing
at Goldthwaite late last night.
The message stated that a man
named Ed Speed and a compani-
on, John O’Brannon, were seen
in a com field owned by Jim Sack
near the town of Goldthwaite.
The owner of the field shot and
killed Speed. O’Brannon was
not harmed. It is not known
whether he was concerned in the
affair or not The information
received here merely stated that
he was with Speed at the time of
the killing. Up to press hour no
further particulars could be learn-

the wife of a Constable who was
shot by a Negro in Belton last
July and whose widow is in des-
titute circumstances and who is
in the contest now by the Temple
Telegram for a beautiful home,
and he has gone to the trouble
and expense to have one thous-

Texas in behalf of the widow
who was so unfortunate as to lose
her husband last July.

In July, 1910, Jim W. Mitchell
Constable at Belton, while defen-
ding the home of a widow, was
murdered by a negro. Jim was
a member of our association.

Goldthwaite, Aug. 8. — Jim
Slack, who killed Ed Speed lives
ten miles down the Bayou from
Goldthwaite. He used a shot
gun, the load taking effect in the
mans’s stomach and killing him
instantly. Jim Slack gave him-
self up to the officers. The man
Speed was a stranger, traveling
through the country with his
family. He is survived by a
wife and two children.—Brown-

paraded the streets yesterday af-
ternoon, headed by a barss band
and two men bearing an immense

wore made and anvil salute fired
on the public square until a late
taur. Before each salute was fir-
ed somebody in a loud voice call-
ed out the name of some suppos-
ed local prohibitionists and made
some comment about him. The
salute was supposed to sound his

Rowena State Bank was down
Monday and attended the K. of
P. Lodge that night and helped
confer the third degree on eight
new men. Mr. Homan is a loyal
