Boysen, Bo Egbert, Tyler Kusak and Shannon Walleck These students were
recognized for their outstanding good manners and courtesy throughout the

out even being recognized. We appreciate you!!!

Congratulations to our seventh graders for sharing their musical gifts at
our liturgies during the month of October. Students played the tone chimes
and served as cantors and song leaders
Instructor Ruth Barton reports that the eighth graders have been work-
ing hard to earn high school credit in "Communications Applications." Stu-
dents have presented many speeches, including a personal profile and an
informative speech of a career in which they are interested. Demonstration
speeches were given to the delight of the entire class. Most of the speeches
involved the preparation of a tasty dish which the class then sampled. Fu-
ture activities are for students to present short stories and poems, as well as
persuasive speeches. Students are also participating in an ongoing study of
the communication process in all areas of life.
Student progress reports will be issued on Wednesday, Nov. 14
Colby Schindler reports that all students have been working hard in prepa-
ration for the school's upcoming Veteran's Day and Christmas programs.
Librarian Dot Harper reports that the school's book fair will be held
Nov. 13-16.
Meagan Walleck reports that the fifth graders are learning about differ-
ent Indian tribes in their Social Studies class.
The PTC meeting will be held on Monday, Nov. 12 in the school library
at 5:30 p.m. All parents are invited to attend. The turkey raffle drawing will
be held after the meeting.

The beauty of this program is that
it allows all types of gifted kids to ex-
press themselves.
“A child can be very gifted and not
ever really get a chance to show it,”
Frank said, “this program gives them
that opportunity.”
Mrs. Frank also tweaked the
original premise a little. “It was
supposed to be Medieval notables,”
said Frank
The program here in Yoakum
was expanded to include more re-
cent historical figures.
“I figured if kids were inter-
means more points toward being ap-
proved.”
Lastly, the commissioners ap-
proved the “master plan" itself in its
entirety.
The only other thing that the county
was waiting on to complete the grant
application was the approval of the
“master plan" by the Texas Historical
Commission.
“I called the Commission just a few
minutes before the meeting this morn-
ing,” Ledbetter said, “and we got their
approval.”
The DeWitt County Courthouse
Preservation Project once again
stressed the importance of public sup-
port for the project's success.
The public can show their support
by making a tax-deductible donation
to the fund that has been set up by the
preservation project strictly for the re-
pairs to the county courthouse.
Donations can be sent to DeWitt
County Historical Commission at
307 N. Gonzales St. in Cuero.
the $4.4 million as the county’s match
to the grant if it is approved.
County Treasurer, Peggy Ledbetter,
said that this was an important part of
the approval process. Mrs. Ledbetter
is also the chairperson of the DeWitt
County Courthouse Preservation
Project
"I he grant approval system is
based on points," Mrs. Ledbetter said.
"I he board gives points based upon
financial commitment of each county.”
The second item on the Court’s
agenda was granting a preservation
easement to the Texas Historical Com-
mission.
The easement would give the His-
torical Commission final say before
any type restoration or remodelling
work could be done on the courthouse
for the duration of the easement pe-
riod.
I he commissioners approved an
easement for perpetuity
“That means forever," Mrs.
Ledbetter stated “This resolution
ested in Abraham Lincoln, I
would let them do their project on
Lincoln.” Frank added.
Students learn about writing,
history, even public speaking
through the program.
‘‘“I’ve really learned a lot by
doing this," said "Queen Eliza-
beth,” Traci Stevens. Ms. Stevens
was wearing a royal gown made
by her and her mother.
This is always their (the stu-
dents) favorite thing to do,” said
Frank. “They may forget what’s
on a worksheet, but they always
remember this."

Two receive minor
injuries in school
bus, truck accident
A Gonzales ISD school bus car-
rying 25 band students was struck by
a pickup Friday afternoon just out-
side the Yoakum city limits, result-
ing in two students being treated and
released at Yoakum Community Hos-
pital.
The 5:45 p.m. accident occured
near the intersection of Texas High-
way 95 and U.S Highway 77A as the
bus driver, Lester Henry, 73, of
Harwood, was attempting to enter
Hwy 77A from Hwy 95.
Henry was waiting at the intersec-
tion for an escort car to catch up and
get ahead of the bus before it contin-
ued to a game at Industrial. When he
proceeded onto the highway behind
the escort car a Sierra pickup driven
by Robert F. Najvar, 37, of Halletts-
ville, failed to yield right of way and
struck the left side of the bus.
The accident was investigated by
DPS Trooper IV Wayne Henkes.
