while Martha was "worrying over the
big dinner she was preparing" (Luke
10:40).
Sure, the Savior might have been
hungry and a nice warm meal might
have tasted very good. But Jesus knew
that the meal could wait — and Mary
knew that it wasn't nearly as impor-
tant as spending time hearing the Son
of God teach her spiritual matters.
Mary sought the "Bread of Life"
— the spiritual bread of Christ our
Lord.
She was hungry spiritually and
was willing to give up a meal rather
than miss a single word Jesus was
saying.
So when Martha told Jesus she felt
it was unfair for her sister to sit with
him while she worked so hard to pre-
pare the meal, the Savior gently ex-
plained that Mary is the one who had
made the right choice.
"My dear Martha," he said, "you
are so upset over all these details!
There is really only one thing worth
being concerned about. Mary has dis-
covered it — and I won't take it away
from her" (Luke 10:41).
What about you and 1? Have we
discovered it? Are we choosing the
really important thing?
Jesus promises us that if we seek
God's Kingdom first, he will provide
everything else we need.
"He (God) will give you all you
need from day to day if you make the
Kingdom of God your primary con-
cern," said Jesus in Luke 112:31.
The Psalmist David was inspired
to write: "Take delight in the Lord, and
he will give you your heart’s desire”
(Psalm 37:4).
If feelings are placed ahead of all
the other seemingly important things,
there will be far fewer hurt feelings.
And those we love will become closer
to us.
Remember the words of scripture
in 1 Corinthians 13:13: "There are
three things that will endure: faith,
hope and love — and the greatest of
these is love."
So instead of rushing out to mow
the lawn or to do anything else around
the house, always make sure that the
people you love are receiving the at-
tention they need at that moment.
Later might be too late!

Take feelings into consideration
before deciding what to do first
What comes first in your life?
How you answer that question
may affect your happiness and that of
your family and friends. And it could
determine your spiritual well-being.
It's so easy to place way too much
importance on the wrong things —
doing the dishes, house cleaning,
cooking, yard work, television pro-
grams, errands, hobbies, sports, the
Internet, reading, minor responsibili-
ties and other day-to-day stuff.
Some of these things have to be
done at one time or another and may
be unavoidable, but nearly all of them
can at least be postponed.
So what's more important than all
of these things? How about feelings
your feelings, the feelings of a
spouse, a child or other relative or
friend?
What we need to realize is that
feelings can't be postponed — not
without alienating someone, even if
only to a small degree. If it happens
again and again, over time it can have
a major devastating effect on our
loved ones.
There are only two choices when
it comes to feelings: Attend to them
right now or miss a golden opportu-
nity and take the chance of leaving a
permanent scar.
If you take care of feelings in a
respectful and loving manner, you add
something extremely valuable to a
relationship If you don't, it becomes
very easy to drift away from the per-
son whose feelings are hurt.
A child who wants to play or just
talk with a parent doesn't need to be
turned away by an excuse, like "I'm
busy right now!" or "Let's do it later"
or "Be quiet. I'm watching TV."
Husbands and wives need to take
time to listen to their spouses and de-
velop a close relationship.
All of us need to choose what's
most important to us — feelings or
things?
Your lawn may need mowing or
dinner may need to be cooked, but are
either of these things more important
than the feelings of someone you
love?
When Jesus went to the house of
Mary and Martha, he was looking for-
ward to warm fellowship with these
two women. And Mary sat down and
gave Jesus her undivided attention.
