up" the Chisholm Trail Memorial Park in anticipation of a visit by
Texas Agriculture Commissioner Susan Combs. Volunteers spent
about an hour tidying up the topiaries, spreading mulch around
the trees and generally sprucing up the park Ms. Combs arrived
in Yoakum on Wednesday, Sept. 10 with much fanfare as she was
escorted to the library in an antique car parade. While at the li-
brary she conducted a town hall meeting where she touted the
new Texas Yes! Program, which is designed to promote rural Texas
as a place to live, work and play. After the town hall meeting, Ms.
Combs was taken to the Chisholm Trail Memorial Park. She was
highly impressed and praised both the park and the City of Yoa-
kum. A big thanks goes out to the volunteers who helped make
the park a bright spot for Ms. Combs visit. Also, a big thanks to

Xi Up silo n Psi
The members of Xi Up-
silon Psi sorority recently
held their Beginning Day
Social with a Dutch Treat
dinner at Chili's in Victoria.
The Social Committee
served as the hostesses for
the evening. The placecards
they designed and made
were hand silouettes of con-
struction paper in each
member's chosen ritual color
with a Beta Sigma Phi
cloisonne pin attached at the
ring finger. The silouettes
also had the 2003-2004
theme "The Colors of
Friendship" sticker with
gold trim as a bracelet.
Dinner was served by a
delightful waiter, named
Michael, who was very sur-
prised that the "sorority" that
had made the reservation
was not comprised of col-
lege-age ladies. After dinner,
final 2002-2003 Secret Sis-
ter gifts were distributed and
each member tried to guess
the identity of her Secret Sis-
ter before opening her gift.
There were very few correct
guesses.
A gift of appreciation was
also presented to chapter
Honorary Member Norma
Steinmann for all of the cro-
cheted names she has made
to benefit the chapter trea-
sury and the beautiful gifts
she has made for each mem-
ber. New Secret Sister names
were then drawn for the
2003-2004 year.
Members in attendance
were Sharia Pohl, Louise
Witte, Sandra Steinmann,
Alice Manning, Linda
Colman, Janice Goodrich,
Maxine Goodson, Cathy
Guettner, Mabel Hickey,
Barbara Kaiser and Kathy
Morrow.
