Wagner ’s first assignment
may be Double-A ball
Ryan Wagner was drafted 14th
overall in the fifst round of the major
league draft by Cincinnati last Tues-
day and the Reds placed him squarely
on a fast track for the big leagues.
“They said they would like to start
me at Double-A,” Wagner told the
Houston Chronicle. “I guess we’ll
go from there ”
The Reds told Wagner, a 6-foot-
4, 210-pound right hander that if he
pitched well at the Double-A level,
he could be in the big leagues by the
end of the summer.
Prior to the draft, Wagner spent
Tuesday morning cleaning house. “I
was really nervous,” he said. “You
just never know with the draft. I was
just hoping it would work out.”
He listened to the draft on an In-
ternet feed, which blacken out shortly
after Cincinnati’s pick came up. Be-
fore the draft was back on-line, he
received a telephone call from the
Reds congratulating him.
“It’s a great organization,” he said,
“and I’m glad to be part of it.”
Wagner didn’t begin the season
as the hot prospect he has become.
He methodically climbed the ladder
with a 94-mph fastball and a good,
hard breaking pitch.
Even if he becomes a starter, he
will need to add a third pitch, but for
now, he has two pitches that might
get him to the big leagues as a re-
liever.
“We took the ‘now’ stuff,” Reds
scouting director Leland Maddox
said. “We think he’s on the fast track.
“I think he and Kyle Sleeth (Wake
Forest) have the best two arms in the
draft.”
Wagner averaged an impressive
16.7 strikeouts per nine innings this
season.
Wagner’s teammate, UH right
hander Brad Sullivan, was also se-
lected in the first round as the 25th
overall pick by the Oakland A’s.
