Council members are paid about
40 percent.
That means Houston's next
mayor — who will be elected this
fall — would be paid $186,986 a
year, up from the $165,817 out-
, going mayor lee P. Brown current-
ly earns.
The raises take effect Jan. 2.
Republicans say the map
could allow the GOP to win
between three to five seats in
the congressional delegation,
which is now controlled 17-15
by Democrats.

Boost to judges'pay will
aid Houston officials
HOUSTON — Harris County
commissioners voted unanimous-
ly Tuesday to raise the pay for
judges, a move which also means
a boost in pay tor-city officials. •
Commissioners accepted a
$14,000 annual increase for Harris
County’s 59 civil and criminal dis-
trictjudges, bringing their salaries
to $125,000 a year. Each of the
county's 23 probate, civil- and crimi-
nabcourt-atJaw judges also received
I a raise, said commissioner’s court
spokesman Stephen Cooney.
As a result of the move, the pay
of the mayor, controller and mem-
bers of city council of the nation’s
fourth-largest city also will receive
a pay increase because of a 1977
state law — and subsequent ordi-
nance — tie the pay of city offi-
cials to that of district judges.

approximately 150 percent of the
salary Harris County pays to a

Austin software film
sees boost from Dean
DALLAS — A Texas software
company is counting on Howard
Dean's surging presidential bid to
lift it from obscurity in the tough
niche industry of raising money
for organizations over the Internet.
From its beginning in 1999,
Convio Inc. hadn’t turned a profit
or attracted much notice until it
began processing credit-card trans-
actions and building personalized
Web pages for Dean volunteers.
1 “It has clearly raised the profile
of the company," said chief exec-
utive Gene Austin. "I've had meet-
ings where prospects mentioned
the Dean site in the first minute."
Convio officials estimate the
Dean campaign will account for
less than 2 percent of the compa
riy's revenues this year. Convio,
based in Austin, received $30,776
from Dean through June 30, the
latest figures available.
Austin said the publicity has
led to discussions with a dozen
new clients who could bring in an
additional $1 million. One of
them, a nonprofit group, has
signed up, a Convio spokes-
woman said, but she would not
identify the client or disclose
terms of the contract.

space travel in Houston
HOUSTON — While his.hopes
to fly to the international space
station were derailed last year, 'N
Sync singer Lance Bass remains
an avid supporter of space travel.
Next month, he will return to
Houston, where he trained a year
ago at NASA’s Johnson Space
Center, to promote space, math
and science to students during sev-
eral school visits as part of events
celebrating World Space Week.
During World Space Week, from
Oct. 4-10, Bass will visit several
Houston elementary and middle
schools, review design proposals
for “Lance’s Lab,” a competition
where students create a hypo-
thetical space station module for
the singer to live in and attend a
reception at a downtown hotel.
Bass, 24, would have been the
youngest person ever in space.
But he had to cancel his plan to fly
to the space station aboard a
Russian Soyuz spacecraft last
October because he failed to raise
the estimated $20 million fare.
The biggest remaining hurdle
is settling the dispute between
Senate and House Republicans
over how to configure districts
in rural West Texas.
Republican House Speaker
> Tom Craddick wants a map that
would create a base for a con-
gressional seat in his home-
town of Midland, where
President Bush lived as a child
and oil and gas are a crucial
part of the economy.
The Senate map, pushed
by Sen. Robert Duncan,
R-Lubbock, would pair
Midland with the larger city of
Lubbock, keeping that agricul-
ture-oriented city the base for a
congressional seat.
After battling for months
against Democrats, it's unlikely
