I When redouble
means penalty points
By Phillip Alder
A couple of times recently, I have men-
tioned responder’s redouble over an
immediate takeout double. This prompt-
ed a few letters and e-mails from readers,
so this week, let’s look at the key-aspects
of this call.
Your partner opens with one of a suit,
and your right-hand opponent doubles. If
you redouble, you promise at least 10
high-card points. Simultaneously, you
deny four-card or better support if part-
ner opened in a major, and deny five-card
or better support if partner bid a minor.
One reason for a redouble is that you are
short in partner’s suit and have length in
at least two of the unbid suits. You hope
to collect a juicy penalty by doubling the
opponents wherever they land — as in
this deal. South has a perfectly normal
takeout double, yet should get killed!
West.first redoubles, then doubles every-
thing thereafter. It is a bonus that the
opponents have only seven-card fits.
West leads the spade queen. East win-
ning with the ace and returning the six,
his lowest card being a suit-preference
signal for clubs. West ruffs and shifts to
the club six. East wins with the club jack
and leads the spade nine. South does best
to pitch a club loser, because East must
next lead a red-colored card to collect the ’
maximum 1,100 penalty. (If East cashes
the club ace and continues with another
spade, declarer just ruffs and shortly
catches West in a red-suit endplay.) But if—
South ruffs and suffers an overruff, the
defenders have several routes to four
down.
