Royal Ivey scored 15 points as
Texas stunned No. 5 Oklahoma
State 70-61 Saturday in a game
delayed several minutes when
some Longhorns players fought
with fans.
With 18 seconds left, a fan
shoved Texas’ TJ. Ford after he
and Ivey wound up in the stands
while scrambling for a loose
ball. About four Texas players
scuffled with spectators, and
play was held up until the offi-
cials calmed things down.
Texas was assessed a technical
foul.
It didn't affect the outcome of
the Big 12 opener for both
teams. Ivey made a career-high
four 3-pointers for the
Longhorns (9-4), who have won
five straight games and eight of
10 against Oklahoma State (13-
1). The Cowboys played most of
the game without leading scorer
Maurice Baker.
Baker, averaging 18.5 points,
strained a groin in practice last
weekend and played just 11 min-
utes, all in the second half. He
scored six points.
The Cowboys missed their
first eight shots and wound up
shooting just 33 percent from
the field (21 of 64). They were
unable to get their transition
game going and missed several
open shots from a halfcourt set.
They also missed 12 of 25 free
throws, including seven of nine
after rallying from a 10-point
deficit to tie the score at 56 with
8:20 left.
Victor Williams' 3-pointer
tied the score, and it was 57-all
when James Thomas sank two
free throws, Ivey hit a 3-pointer
from the left side and Thomas
scored on a dunk to give the
Longhorns a 64-57 lead at the
5:32 mark.
Oklahoma State scored the
game's next point but couldn't
get any closer the rest of the way.
Sterling’s Dustin Fleming had the top quali-
fying time in the 100 breaststroke but finished
third in the finals with a 1:03.71.
"I just didn't get it done today," he said.
Fleming has been fighting a groin injury and
didn’t think he swam a strong race.
The Sterling boys team finished eighth out
of 15 teams and the Sterling girls placed sixth
of 15. Cypress Creek won the boys competi-
tion and Humble won the girls division.

the 100-meter backstroke Saturday at the
Sterling Ranger Classic.
White swam a 1:01.19, breaking her school
record by three-hundredths of a second. She
set the record as a sophomore.
"I went out a lot harder today,” she said.
"That record has been up there for a year and I
wanted to break it."

An angler once commented

that cold weather and low tides

Spurs win 1-35 battle
DALLAS (AP) — The Interstate
35 rivalry between San Antonio
and Dallas is rapidly becoming
of the NBAs best.
Teny Porter hit two free
throws with 5.1 seconds left,
giving the Spurs a 105-103 vic-
«"• tory over the Mavericks, aveng-
ing an agonizing overtime loss
10 days before.
Dallas trailed 103-95 when
Tim Duncan, who had 29 points
and 17 rebounds, fouled out with
1:49 left. The Mavs scored the
next eight, with Dirk Nowitzki
tipping in his own miss with 9.3
seconds left to tie the game for
the first time.
San Antonio, with its Midwest
Division lead on the line, got the
ball to Porter and on a crossover
dribble at the foul line he
knocked heads with Dallas’Steve
Nash. Nash came away from the
collision with a foul and a bloody
gash over his left eyebrow.
While Nash was mended on
the sideline, Porter’s first foul
shot rolled around the rim,
skipped onto the glass and
dropped in. He swished his sec-
ond for his 22nd point, his most
in two seasons.
On Dallas' final possession,
Nash dribbled free of Antonio
Daniels and fired up a 3-pointer
that clanged away, sending the
Mavericks to their second
straight loss.
