of the ranch workers. Some of the little ones were
afraid of us and wouldn't come out of the houses.

On Monday, it was time for the final goodbyes.
The people ate so nice and friendly, it seems we
had known them for years instead of just days. I
gave Beatrice a Texas flag hat pin and gave one to
' Thyse, the Afrikaans ranch manager. We took off
to Pretoria and the taxidermist. It was late after-
noon when we finally got to the Farm Inn. Nic left
us there to relax. _«
On Tuesday, Nic pickl'd us up around 10 a.m.,
and we headed back to the market. On the way, we
stopped at the ostrich leather-work factory. 1 had
seen some full quill ostrich shoes and wanted to
check the prices. lire prices were reasonable, $93

My hunting package was contracted to be in two into the truck. This was finally done along with
different areas. Four days in the bushveldt where
we currently were, and four days in the eastern
cape. When we found out that the eastern cape was
an eight-hour drive away, which would take a full
day of travel, and then eight hours to get back,
another full day, I asked Nic if we could stay where
we were and trade out some of the animals that are
more prevalent on the eastern cape for the ones
here and not have to spend two days traveling. He
was agreeable to this, and we decided to trade the
wildebeest and gemsbok for a kudu, which is one
of the most prestigious of the African antelopes. I
also agreed to trade the two springboks, which are
small, short-homed antelope, for another impala. I
could still get a blestok If we came across one.
The ranch we went to was owned by one of
Nic s best friends. When we got to the ranch, the
owner, Richard, greeted us like old friends. Richard and went to bed and sure enough, the next morning
suggested I use one of his rifles because the .243 '

of Richard’s truck, with Marjie riding in the cab
with Richard. The brush was not as thick on this
ranch, because a fire had swept through about five afternoon hunt was over. I immediately took
years ago and killed a lot of the underbrush.
We saw several kudus, and, believe me, they are
gigantic animals, and as pretty as they are big. Nic .
tapped the cab top, and we stopped. He pointed out ^e t0 ^ave some 'n cas<’ I8ct again-
a wide-homed, tail specimen, and I got into a
shooting position, taking rest over the top of the
cab. I immediately started moving my head for-
ward and back, sliding my face along the stock.
For the life of me, I couldn't get a sight picture
through the scope. Needless to say, the kudu didn’t
wait for me to correct my mistake. He just went
deeper into the bush. An opportunity lost.
Richard gave me the 7mm and told me to try it. I

On Friday, I was feeling better and we went on
hunting. This was the day I finally got a chance to
see the gemsbok. The first one we saw was a
youngster with undeveloped horns, so we passed.

The plane left on time and after 26 hours in an
airplane, we arrived in Houston and had more trou-

Smce we had been on a farm or ranch and had
been in contact with livestock, all of the shoes we
had in our luggage had to to disinfected. We called

Nic took us to Lion Country. This is a large high-

I talked with Nic Saturday night and told him
that Matjie and I wanted to leave the ranch on
Monday rather than Tuesday. We knew that a
25-hour flight would be a killer. Nic was
agreeable.
Sunday was our last day of hunting. We hunt-
ed hard and saw no gemsbok. It looked as if 1
had missed my only chance a few days earlier.
That afternoon on our last hunt, we were at a
water hole and two cows and a mature bull
showed up. I didn't know what it was until Nic
told me. The eland is Africa's largest antelope.
The horns aren’t huge like a kudu, but they are
massive animals. I asked Nic what the price of
it would be, and after some quick figuring with
the trading of a blesbok, my jackal, I could get
this eland for $800 U.S. 1 nearly did it, but with
the other things 1 was getting mounted and the
shipping fees and such, I decided not to shoot.
Besides, I still had rather have tne gemsbok. We

As mentioned earlier, Marjie was riding up front
with Richard during the hunt, and she told him
about being sick. He told her that his 18-year-old
daughter had had this same flu just a few days
earlier. She had gone to the doctor and been given
some medicine that knocked it out overnight. He
took us to his house and gave Marjie some of the
medicine. She took it when we got back to camp
she was back to 100 percent. I’m glad she got well
and didn't have to take all the medicine because
later that afternoon as we were walking and stalk-
ing, the flu bug hit me. Luckily, we were headed
back to the truck when I started to feel ill, and the

We drove some more and finally got within
range of another large kudu. This one wasn’t as
wide as the other one, but he had longer horns with
three full twists and the white tips turning in, the
sign of a mature bull. I took careful aim right
