Bulldogs open District play with win over Bearcats
ing a second a Five. An illegal
substitution penalty against the
Bearcats moved the ball back
into their territory. Owen broke
up a pass intended for Kyle
Sloan. On third down Stephen
Reyes, Hernandez and Jimenez
teacher would have been proud
of his performance of a high
snap. Jake Wedeking took the
snap and burst up the middle
for 18 yards and a first down
at the Hawley 35. Three car-
ries by Woodard moved the ball
to the Hawley 16. The Alvarado
to Owen connection worked
for another 10 yards through
the air. Detrich Mays got the
call on first and goal from the
six and quickly converted,
scooting around right end for
the score following the block
of Tanner Walters to turn the
comer. Alvarado had to duck
his head and dive at the goal line,
but he crossed the line for a two
point conversion to give the
Dogs a 15-0 lead.
The Bearcats started with
great field position thanks to the
Dogs touching an onside kick
attempt before the required ten
yards. Blue’s defense wasn’t
going to yield, however, regard-
less of the field position. Derek
Apple stopped Mooney after a
three yard gain. Jamar Deice
broke up a pass for Sparr. The
Bearcats decided to go for it on
fourth down, but they didn’t
have success as Jimenez hit
Mooney in the backfield and
was joined by a gang of defend-
ers to stop the tailback for a one
yard loss and turn the ball back
over to the Bulldog offense.
Stamford took over on their
own 43 and methodically moved
down the field. Jacob Riley got
the ball rolling with a carry up
the middle for a two yard gain
despite being hit as soon as he
touched the ball. After a hold-
ing penalty against Hawley
moved the ball into Bearcat ter-
ritory, Wedeking worked the
middle for a yard. Woodard
caught a pitch that was a little
behind him, but still managed a
four yard gain. Mays got the call
on third and five and fought
through the tackle of Justin
New and Nick Lassiter for the
first down. The next first down
came via runs by Mays and
Woodard and an offsides pen-
alty against Hawley. Mays al-
most broke free on a nine yard
run that pushed the ball down
to the Bearcat 14. Woodard
went around left end and
waltzed untouched in to the end
zone. The kick failed to leave
the score at 21-0 Bulldogs.
Hawley tried to go to the air
but Mays and Deice broke up
passes on first and second
downs. Garrett got a high snap
on third down and Cruz
Hernandez tracked him down
for a 16 yard loss.
The Dogs struck quickly when
Alvarado hit Walters and the
receiver escaped defenders until
Stetson Gartman was able to
bring him down at the Hawley
five yard line after a 52 yard
gain. Alvarado had to recover a
mishandled snap and lost six
yards. Mays went around left
end and met New after a three
yard gain. Alvarado rolled out
on third down and found
Wedeking who took the recep-
tion into the end zone. Again the
kick failed, so the Bulldogs has
a 27-0 lead with 0:27 left in the
first half. \
Blue would get one more
chance in the half after
Hernandez recovered a Hawley
fumble on the Bearcats’ first
play from scrimmage. Mays
was stopped for a yard loss on
first down and a penalty pushed
the ball back five more. Alvarado
hit Owen with a 13 yard pass,
but time ran out in the half.
• The Bulldogs took the second ,
half kickoff, but things didn’t
go as well as in the first half. A
holding penalty wiped out a 32
yard connection from Alvarado
to Owen and Gartman inter-
cepted the next pass which was
intended for Deice.
Passes from Garrett to Sparr
and Polk moved the football
down to the Stamford 20 yard
line. Owen put an end to the
drive with an interception at the
17 that he returned out to the
40 yard line. A personal foul
penalty against the Bearcats
moved the ball 15 yards more.
Woodard put the Bulldogs
back on the score board when
he turned the comer and out- Senior Rode Owen, #9 played a great game at last Friday \ win against Hawley.
to earn one more first down on
the drive, but it ultimately stalled
and Alvarado boomed a 51 yard
punt.
The Bearcats moved out from
their own 15 to midfield with
runs by Mooney and Anthony
Morton and yet another 15 yard
penalty against the Bulldogs.
The fourth quarter opened with
We are all very thankful for the win against Hawley last Friday
night. We are very happy that it was a win against a district oppo-
nent. I am very proud of our players for their attentiveness dur-
ing workouts and the hard work that went into this win. It was
nice to see smiles on their faces after the game.
We must put this game behind us and get ready for Stanton.
Stanton beat Anson this past week and will be a tough opponent
for the Bulldogs. We must shut down their QB, #6 Michael Wash-
ington and the hard running tailback, #20 Bobby Gutierrez. We
must prepare very well for this team. They are well coached and
play a full 4 quarters.
Award wiflners for the Hawley game are the following: The :
Blue Brick Award goes to Junior #67 Cruz Hernandez for block-
ing the very best of all of the offensive linemen. The Hammer
Award goes to Sophomore #3 Jamar Deice that really put a lick
on the wide receiver for Hawley. The Dog Bone Award goes to
Senior #2 Wesley Woodard who really hustled anchored 3 touch-
downs for the Bulldogs. Senior Rode Owen #9, who had 2 inter-
ceptions and at least 3 receptions on offense. Rode may have
played the best game of his life. Thank all of you that continue to
support our players.

The Stamford Bulldogs put an
end to a 18-game losing streak
Friday night at Bulldog Stadium
with a convincing 34-6 win
over district rival Hawley. The
victory puts the Bulldogs in a
three way tie for the lead of
District 4-2A with Colorado City
and Stanton after the first week
of district play. One-team will
be eliminated from, the tie this
week when the Bulldogs host
the Stanton Buffaloes.
The Bulldogs totally domi-
nated the first half in building
up a 27-0 lead. The Dogs had
245 yards total offense in the
first half to just 28 for the
Bearcats. Penalties slowed
Stamford in the second half; but
the Bulldogs still controlled the
game, finishing with 377 yards
despite 110 yards in penalties.
The Bearcats improved to post
245 total yards.
The two teams exchanged
punts to open the game with
Angel Alvarado giving the Bull-
dogs the advantage. The Dogs
scored on their second posses-
sion on a six play drive that
covered 58 yards. Wesley
Woodard carried three times
for 36 yards, including the fi-
nal 21, and Alvarado hit Rode
Owen for a 19 yard pass over
the middle. Alvarado added the
PAT to give the Bulldogs a 7-0
lead with 5:10 left in the first
quarter.
The Bearcats came back on
the arm of quarterback Cody
Garrett. He completed passes to
Dustin Polk and Michael Sparr
to give Hawley a first down at
the Bulldog 45. From here a
pass for Sparr was too high;
Brandon Jimenez spun James
Mooney down for a one yard
gain; and Owen stopped Polk
as soon as he caught a two yard
pass. The Bulldogs got lucky
when Sparr’s punt found the
end zone instead of dying at the
one yard line.
The Bulldogs took over on
their own 20 and marched
downfield. Alvarado kept for
four yards on first down, then
Woodard went off the right side
of his line for 17 yards. (,'ody
Solomon hit Woodard in the
backfield for a yard loss, a sec-
ond down pass fell incomplete
and the third down carry just
netted seven yards. The Bull-
dogs line up in punt formation
with Alvarado back. His drama

slipped down for a five yard
loss.
The Bulldogs wasted a 28 yard
pass to Walters that gave them
a first down at the Hawley 30.
A dead ball personal foul after a
run by Mays pushed the chains
back to second and 25.
Alvarado tried to angle his punt,
but the ball went into the end
zone for a touch back.
Hawley started on its scoring
drive with a six yard run by
Morton. Sloan ran for 13 to
make up for a holding penalty.
Morton bounced off Apple for
another six yard gain and a first'

ran everyone 49 yards into the
end zone. Alvarado added the
PAT and the Dogs had a 34-0
lead with 5:59 left in the third
quarter.
Once again the Bearcats got
good field position and ortce
again their drive was thwarted
by an Owen interception ahd
return.
The Bulldogs started at their
own 17 yard line but a two yard
run was matched with a five
yard penalty and a pass that fell
complete despite Kolby
Templeton climbing the ladder Hawley at the 50 yard line, fac-
and fighting defenders for the
ball. The Dogs faced a third and
14 from their own 14. Woodard
got the call and he burst up the
middle and went 86 yards un-
touched. The play got called
back because of a penalty,
