Flower Show A Success

Chris Grounds, Flower Show
Chairperson, was pleased with the
quality of the show in spite of the
areas drought. The Horticulture
Sweepstakes Award went to
Beverly Bryan forsixteeirfelue rib-
bons. The Arboreal Award for best
tree or shrub branch was won by
Wanda Heyle, who also had four
other blue ribbon winners. Award
of Horticulture Excellence and
Award of Distinction for potted
plants went to Gayle Safford for a
poly tail plant that she had for thirty
years. Gayle also had 7 other blue
ribbon winners in Horticulture.
Louise Massey won an Award of
Merit in the Iris Section and one
other blue. Award of Merit for
Hanging Basket was won by Joyce
Jordan, who won four other blue
ribbons.
In the Design Division, the
Table Artistry Award was won by
Nelda Hopkins, who also had four
other blue ribbons. Jo Ann Denson
won Flower Show Award for a
dried arrangement that won the
Award of Distinction. She also had
two other blue ribbons, one for a
small design and a Petite Award for
best petite arrangement. Janice
Allen won Flower Show Award
and TriColor Award for all fresh
design. Other blue ribbon winners
in the Design Division were Jessie
Rister, Wanda Heyle won 2 blue,
and Margie Hertel won Petite for
small arrangement.
In the Junior and Intermediate
Divisions, Callan Rice won 4 blue
ribbons, Conner Rice - 3, and Caleb
Rice - 2. Jessice Decker and
Rebecca Decker each had 2 blue
ribbons. Michaela Wi 1 son also had
2 blue ribbons.
Other Blue ribbons were re-
ceived by Doris McLemore - 1.
Jessie Rister - 3, Gertrude League
- 2, Sandra Browning - 3, Jo Ann
Calk - 5, Loyce Rogers - 3, Pat
Prewit - 3, and Chris Grounds - 5.
Margie Hertel had 2 blue ribbons
in Horticulture, Charlene Bishop -
2, and Billie Powell - 2.
Posters done by Fifth Grade pu-
pils with “Give a Hoot, Don’t Pol-
lute” theme each received a blue
ribbon. There were 36 of these
posters.
Educational Exhibits by Loyce
Rogers, Marge Barnett, Gayle
Safford, Laura Reber, Pat Prewit,
Joyce Jordan, and Janice Allen also
won special awards.
Judges for the Show were:
Gertrude League, Sandra Brown-
ing, Patti Ivy, Alma Fecher, Frona
Carpenter, and Loyce Rogers.

Lady Bulldogs get 2nd in the District
Track Meet, 8 qualify for Regional
The Stamford Lady Bulldogs
came in second place overall in the
District Track Meet with total team
points of 126. Cisco was the Dis-
trict champs with 208 points.
Haskell came in 3rd with 84 pts,
Eastland, 4lh with 69 pts, Eula, 5lh
with 64 pts., Hawley, 6,h with 38
pts., and Anson, 7,h with 32 pts.
Eight Lady Bulldogs qualified for
Regional in the meet held last Tues-
day and Thursday.
The 4x 100 Relay team qualified
for Regional with first place med-
als and a time of 51.76, they are
Tristan Ford, Cherrelle Collins,
Stephanie Jackson and Amy
Gardner, Alternates are Tara Ford
and Jaime Snow; Amanda
Edmondson place 2nd in the 3200m
Run with a time of 13:13.29; Jaime
Snow placed Is' in the 800m Run
with a time of 2:31.64; Marissa
Patton place 2nd in the 300m Inter-
mediate Hurdles with her time of
50.31; in the 200m Dash there were
two girls qualifying for Regional,
Amy Gardner with 1“ place and a
time of 26.57 and Stephanie Jack-
son 2nd place with her time of 26.58.
In field events Ember Strand
qualified in two events, in the Dis-
cus, Ember came in 1u with a throw
of 106’8” and in the Shot Put she
came in 2nd with a throw of 31’ 1”
which qualified her for Regional
Congratulations to all these young
ladies on a iob well done
The Regional track meet will be
held April 25"’ & 26,h in Abilene al
ACU.
Other girls placing at the Dis-
trict track meet were: 800m Run-
Tristan Ford-3rd, 2:38.78 and sis-
ter Tara Ford-5th, 2:41.41; 100m
Hurd les-Marissa Patton-3rd, 16.08:
100m Dash-Cherrelle Colhns-4th,
13.04; 4x20()m Relay-3rd. 1:55.17;
400m Dash-Amy Gardner-6th,
1:06.12; 300m I.Hurdles-Cameron
Nauert-4th, 54.58; 4x400m Relay-
Stamford-5th, 4 31.43; High Jump-
Cameron Nauert, Marissa Pattor
and Melissa Lisle tied for 5th place
with 4’8"; and in the Shot Put-
Cherrelle Collins 5th. 26’11 3/4".

High School Students Sweep
U.I.L. Prose, are Statebound
Congratulations to Brandon Cox,
Adria Wendeborn, and Marissa
Patton for winning 1st. 2nd, and
3rd place in UIL Prose Interpreta-
tion. These students will be repre-
senting Stamford High School at
the State UIL Academic meet at Uni-
versity of Texas in Austin on May
1st and 2nd.
To qualify for state, students must
win 1st, 2nd or 3rd at the regional
meet held at A.C.U. since there are 4
regions in the state, there will be
12 prose readers at state and 3
are from Stamford!! These stu-
dents are under the direction of
Kelly Martin.
Knights of Columbus seeking
Volleyball and Horseshoe participants
St. Ann’s Knights of Columbus
Council #10480 in Stamford is hav-
ing their annual Cinco De Mayo cel-
ebration May 4th at St. Ann’s
Church grounds in Stamford.
A Co-ed volleyball tournament
will take place at 1:00 p.m.
Trophies and t-shirts will be
awarded to the top three teams. The
entry fee is $40 per team.
The trophies were donated by
Lawrence Brothers in Stamford and
Hamlin. The t-shirts will be donated
by Swenson Meats, Sonic and
Gonzales Tile. If you would like to
enter the tournament call Bobby
Acosta at 773-3280 or 576-3551.
A horseshoe tournament will
also be taking place along with the
volleyball tournament. Each team
of two will pay $ 15, ($7.50 per par-
ticipant). Cash prizes will be
awarded to the top two teams. For
information on entering call Louis
Ramos 823-2911.
The Knights will have Bingo, dif-
ferent food booths, train ride and
other games for children during the
celebration that will take place af-
ter Sunday Mass at St. Ann's.
Funds raised by the Knights wiII
help award a scholarship this year
and give the Council funds to op-
erate for the next year.
The Knights have recently
started painting the St. Ann’s
Church. All expenses and labor is
being donated by the Knights and
other Church members and volun-
teers.
Seniors, Eric Rangel, Jason Gardner and Eric Richardson will compete at the Regional Track Meet at ACC in
Abilene. Rangel will compete in the 800m Run, Gardner will compete in the 200m Dash and Richardson will
be competing in the Discus. See results for the District meet on page 8.
