N THE FATHERLAND
INTERESTING BITS OF NEWS
FROM THE GREAT GERMAN
EMPIRE.
WHAT’S DOING IN OLD HOME
Summary of the Most Important Hap-
penings in the Land of the Kaiser—
Timely Items for the German
Readers.
The war probably will lead to the
further transfer of Europe’s art treas-
ures to the United States, in the opin-
ion of Prof. Wilhelm von Bode, gen-
eral director of the Royal museums at
Berlin. Prof, von Bode gives several
reasons; that the war is making a
great increase in the wealth of many
Americans; and that the breaking up
of several of the great private collec-
tions in America, including that of
the late J. P. Morgan, and the acquisi-
tion of many of their choicest pictures
by public art museums, will tend
strongly to develop the demand for
good art works. Professor Bode de-
clares that in this way the public col-
lections of New York, Boston, Wash-
ington and Chicago, together with doz-
ens of cities not yet identified with art
in an international sense, will become
fully equal to those of European cit-
ies. This fresh demand for art works
In the United Stales, Professor Bode
says, will strike Europe at a time when
people will be forced to sell in order
to get money to pay their debts. Many
fine old pictures now owned by pri-
vate collectors in Europe, and particu-
larly in England, will in consequence
find their way across the Atlantic, he
thinks.

Kaiser Wilhelm has sent congratula-
tory messages to Grand Admiral von
Tirpitz, the former minister of the
navy, and Grand Admiral von Koester,
the former grand admiral of the Ger-
man fleet. The message to Admiral
von Tirpitz reads : “After visiting my
fieetf which returned victoriously from
a heavy battle,' I feel I must convey
to you niy personal thanks for what
you have performed in my service. Our
ships and arms upheld themselves
brilliantly in the battle in the North
sea. It is also for you'a day of glory.”
That to Admiral von Koester reads:
“From the fleet flagship, which has
returned from fresh laurels, I send
to you, the old chief of the fleet, my
imperial salutations. You laid the
foundation for the careful employment
of all arms- and the tactical train-
ing of the fleet.” The emperor has
promoted Vice Admiral Scheer, com-
mander of the German battle fleet, to
be admiral. Vice Admiral Hipper has
been awarded the order Pour le
Merite.

A mother who gives birth to twins,
or to triplets in Germany is entitled,
not only to fhe “nursing money” and
the “weekly war assistance” which the
government provides for its needy
women, but may collect the prescribed
smm in duplicate or triplicate accord-
ing to the number of children born,
according to a ruling published by the
imperial insurance bureau. The de-
cision was the outcome of the suit of
a Berlin woman, who, giving birth to
twins, was refused nursing money and
the weekly war allowance for more
than one child. The insurance branch
bureau in her district held that the
law permitted only one payment re-
gardless of the number of children
born. The imperial bureau, which
controls all the municipal branches
in the empire, holds that it is of the
utmost importance for every mother
to be nourished in the very best pos-
sible way; and that two or three chil-
dren require more nourishment from
the mother than one.

Street car lines in many parts of
Germany hope in the near future to be
able to increase their tariffs by about
50 per cent in order to meet increased
costs. At a congress of street car
men held recently in Berlin resolu-
Ga»s were unanimously adopted in
which it was pointed out that the pres-
ent universal tariff of 10 pfennigs
(2% cents) was adopted in the nine-
ties, whereas even before the war the
expenses of most companies had risen
50 per cent and probably will rise even
more after the war. A decided de-
terioration of all lines is to be ex-
pected, the resolutions point out, un-
less they are allowed to raise prices
to 15 pfennigs (3% cents).

Latest available statistics do not in-
dicate that race suicide is on the in-
crease in Berlin. February figures
show that five mothers, ranging in age
from forty to forty-five years, gave
birth respectively to their sixteenth,
seventeenth, eighteenth, nineteenth and
twentieth child. Three women had
their thirteenth, eight their twelfth,
five their eleventh and seven their
tenth. The records tell of the births’
of 14 pair of twins in Febraary.
YES, HE KNEW HIM SLIGHTLY
Visitor, Deceived by Local Custom,
Rather Put His Foot in It in
Conversation.
The habit in agricultural districts
of referring colloquially to a farmer
by the name of his farm is fraught
with dangerous possibilities to a
stranger.
In such a district a gentleman had
been resident for a few weeks, and in
conversation one day with a farmer
received a long tale of the shortcom-
ings of Stonepark, a neighboring
farmer recently gone to his last ac-
count. A few days later the visitor
fell talking with Hillhead, another
farmer.
“I suppose you knew old Stonepark,
who died lately?” remarked the visi-
tor.
“Aye, I did that,” replied Hillhead,
slowly chewing a straw.
“Rather slippery customer, I hear,”
ventured the visitor.
“Wadna wonder,” replied Billhead.
“In fact,” continued the visitor, “a
regular daylight robber, and no friend
of yours, I imagined’
The farmer fixed his gaze on the far
horizon, and said: “Well, yes, we
were kind o’ friendly. Ye see, Stone-
park was my father.”—London Tit-
Bits.

RATHER ROUGH ON TOMPKINS
Girls Might at Least Have Chosen
Some Other Tune for Their
First Rendition.
Mr. Tompkins is a hard-working
man at his trade as a shoemaker. By
laboring early and late he' managed
to earn enough to educate and dress
his two daughters very well.
Now, he was so proud of these girls
that at last he bought them a piano.
A few days after the arrival of the
instrument a friend saw him.
“Hello, Tompkins!” he said; “and
how did the piano go off?”
“Beautifully, Smith,” replied the
shoemaker, “the girls were as grate-
ful as possible, and it’s fine to hear
them singing and playing. But what
do you suppose was the very first tune
they learned?”
“Dunno, I’m sure,” was the friend’s
reply.
“ ‘Everybody Works but Father,’ ”■
said Tompkins mournfully. — Pitts-
burgh Chronicle.
Ancient Gooseberries.
Gooseberries canned 25 years age
were eaten with spoons dating back
180 years at a wedding anniversary
in Fulton, Mo., recently. It is easy
to understand how the. spoons could
have been handed down from genera-
tion to generation for the period
named, but it is not so easy to compre-
hend how the gooseberries got' safely
through the quarter century.
How time drags when we are idle;
but how it flies when we are working
hard at something worth while.
“I hafe jam.”
“Do you mean on bread or in the

imagining breeds is-hatreds.
