The Colorado-to Gulf highway
scheme is the occasion of nearly
as many gabfests as the inter-
coastal canal windies of recent
years, and as far as it has gone
promises nearly half as little in
accomplishment. It takes more
than ability and willingness to
consume 60 cents worth of grub
with French names to build—or
even plan—canals and highways.

The ani-
Fair at Brenham Will Open Today
Brenham, Texas, October 20.—
The second annual Washington
County fair will be formally open-
ed tomorrow morning^ It was
expected that the Governor or
the Lieutenant Governor would
be here, but the absence of Gov-
ernor Colquitt from the State,
and the death of Lieutenant Gov-
ernor Mayes’ father prevents
either from being here, and Sec-
retary Dever of the Fair Asso-
ciation will probably open it.
The park is a scene of activity
today, exhibitors getting every-
thing in readiness for the open-
ing.
Demonstration Agent L. C
Wilkerson has gone to the Dallas
Fair with an exhibit at Washing-
ton County products.
You may not believe it, at first
thought, but we have listed up
37 prominent and near prominent
Texans who, so far as we know,
have not announced a willingness
to serve the dea r pee-pul as gov-
ernor.
Old man Nelson Aldrich prob-
ably imagined he pulverized the
Glass-Owen currency and bank-
ing bill when-he called it social-
istic. That is about the punk-
estobjection to the measure we
have observed, the measure
is not socialistic—not as our post-
al and public school systems.
And a great many very sensible
and patriotic citizens, who are
not socialists would like it better
if it merited some more of Mr.
Aldrich’s objections.

of the shooting. Following an

Lions at Large Cause Panic.
Leipsic, Germany, Oct. 20._
Five lions belonging to an Ameri-
can circus obtained their free-
dom in the streets of Leipsic to-
day owing to a collision betweeh
a street car and their cage, while
it was on the way to the railroad
station after a performance.
The cage was torn open by the
shock and the appearance of the
wild animals in the center of the
city created a panic among the
thousands here to attend the
celebration of the centennial of
the “Battle of Nations.”
One of the lions entered a
hotel, rushed upstairs and pro-
ceeded along the corridors, driv-
ing the guests into their rooms.
It was some time before police-
men arrived and shot the animal.
The other four also were shot
and killed in various parts of
city. Nobody was attacked
the lions.
Ten of the deputies against
whom there was said to be in-
sufficient evidence were released
today. The others had
previously set at liberty.
