Believe Flying Snakes Exist.
The belief in the existence of flying
snakes is widely current in India, but
few people profess to have seen them.
It would be interesting to 'find out
how the legend came into existence.
These snakes are supposed to live on
trees and make a flying dart at their
victims. Snakes have been known to
drop down trees and bite people but
it is not these which are known as
flying snakes in India.

Simple Pleasures.
To become again more joyous, more
childlike, more naive than we are, to
look into the world with clear eyes and
to consign to the devil the problemati-
cal chimeras behind which only too
often hides the unclean turmoil of the
market place, chimeras which have
made us unhappy, slavish and uncer-
tain—that would do us all good.—Bos-

Stairways for Firemen Only.
Spiral stairways, built entirely of
concrete, have been installed in fire-
proof shafts in a recently completed
theaters in Paris. These stairways
are intended to give firemen access
to all parts of the building without in-
terference with the public entrances
and exits.
Ghoulish Glee.
“From this time on,” said he, when
the only woman who had ever rejected
him passed from his sight, "from this
time mine shall be the delight to
wreak vengeance on woman. I shall
be a shoe salesman, and instead of sell-
ing them shoes one size too small, with
my persuasive manner I shall make
them buy them smaller still. Ha, hal”
Her Thought.
“D you know that a woman is ca
pable of torturing a man with her
’cruelty and mockery without the
faintest twinge of conscience, because
she'll think every time she looks at
him: ‘I’m tormenting him to death
now, but I’ll make up for it with my
love later.’ ’’—The Idiot, by Fyodor
Dostoevsky. Translated by Constance
Garnett. Heinemann.

How “Teetotaler” Originated.
Teetotaler, the term applied to
abstainer from all fermented liquors,
originated with Richard Turner, an
artisan of Preston, England, who, con-
tending for the principle at a temper-
ance meeting in 183.3, asserted that
“Nothing but te-te-total will do.” The
word was immediately adopted.
In a Fir Tree.
In Scappoose, Ore,, there is a wind-
mill in a fir tree. The fir tree, which
serves as a tower, was sawed off at
a height of about 60 feet from th®
ground, and a well was sunk at the
foot of the tree. A tank house was
then attached to the side of the trunk
some 40 feet above the ground, a
wind wheel was placed above, and the
ingenious owner has a model mill for
all practical purposes.

Wilson May Holiday in Texas.
Washington, Dec. 2.—Presi-
dent Wilson has under considera-
tion invitations, to spend his
Christmas holidays in Columbus,
S. C; Augusta, Ga., or in a place
near Corpus Christi, Tex. He
will not decide which to accept
until just before he is ready to
go. If congress remains in sess-
ion without a holiday recess
on the president probably will
take vacation at all.
