GET OUT THE VOTE
Next Tuesday people everywhere will have the opportunity
to make history by doing one very simple thing: voting.
The 2004 presidential election may be one of the closest in
history, which is an even greater reason to exercise the right
that our ancestors fought so hard to deliver.
Did you know that after the 2000 presidential election CNN
reported that only 51 percent of potential voters exercised
their right to vote? When you compare that statistic to other
democratic nations we rank near the bottom for voter partici-
pation.
We could learn a very valuable lesson from the newly demo-
cratic nation of Afghanistan. In October of this month there
were lines of people that circled city blocks. What were these
people waiting to do? Vote. The people of Afghanistan have
gone through great struggles to earn their right to afree elec-
tion and they’re taking full advantage of this opportunity.
America has also gone through great struggles to earn the
right to vote. That’s exactly what our nation is about: Democ-
racy and our right to vote. The right to vote is our guarantee
that we will remain a democracy and continue to enjoy the
freedoms that are the basis of America. Freedoms including
speech and religion are ultimately guaranteed by the right to
vote.
With today’s political, economic and social climate, now is the
time for each of us to make our voice heard. In a world where
most people are content to remain silent, even the smallest
of voicescan become aloud cry. The 2000 elections proved
this: every vote counts. That’s why I’m reminding everyone
today to take advantage of that right and get to the polls on
Tuesday. Every vote makes a difference.

Many people feel that they won’t have any effect on
an outcome if they vote, so why bother. If you think about it,
it is amazing how much time we spend during the day, week
and year talking about, reading about or trying to get our
views over to others about an election. If we hold our
freedom to choose very high, why is it so difficult to act on it
and vote? At this moment there are American service men
and women in harms way so that other countries can gain the
freedom to choose and to vote. We owe it to them, if for no
other reason, to exercise that right and responsibility in this
country and vote every chance we get.
When we choose and vote we have a great
responsibility to insure that our impact is for the good of all,
not just what I can gain out of it. The impact that you impose
by voting is for the time of the term of the office. It is so
important that we should make the best possible choice when
we vote. We can do this by being informed, past record and
personal views of the people on the ballot and many others
things. But how many times do you truly seek God’s will in
who to choose?
The bible tells us to take all request to God. The
people who make decisions, at whatever level of
government, need to make their decisions using God’s
guidance. So shouldn’t we use God’s guidance to choose
them? I encourage you to pray concerning all things and to
follow the will of God in all decisions in your life.
