Indians bombed
Wolf Creek Park
The Indians got
shelled by Port
Arthur-Thomas Jef-
ferson Tuesday.
The game was 1-0 at
the end of three inn-
ings when pitcher
Ray Kennedy left
the game complain-
ing of a sore arm.
After that a couple
of big innings put
Port Arthur ahead
before Cleveland
could stop their hitt-
ing attack, but
Cleveland couldn’t
generate one of their
own and the game
ended 16-0.
hot rod event
Hot Rods at Wolf Creek Park
The Wolf Creek Park will be having
it’s annual Rod Run on March 8, 9 and 10.
There could be anywheres from 300 to 500
hot rods forthe public to look at. The cars
will be arriving Friday and will be judged
Sunday.
But if your interested in the purely
physical aspect of the game and want your
golf outing to offer a Strenuous-workout the
course is tailored for you. If you walk the
course your going to know that you have
had a workout. Your going to do a lot of
climbing up the and down the hills.
The public course is part of the Cape
Royale housing complex which is a crea-
tion of the Mitchell Development Corpora-
tion The Corporation is the same one
responsible^ for the Woodlands develop-
ment.
The general manager of Royale
Greens is Bob Blankenship who, along with
his wife Paula, run the course on a day to
day basis.
The Blakenships have been running
things there for about eight years, and are
familiar with many of the area golfers who
are in turn familiar with them.
Bob Blakenship was born and raised
in Witchita Falls, and has made his living
on the business side of golf since 1965 while
he was still in Witchita Falls. In 1969, he
helped build a nine-hole course there for the
Skyline Country Club. And now he is once
again utvolved with the construction of a
course, since they are adding nine holes
here at Royale Greens.
Blakenship explained some of the
construction methods involved in building a
course, and especially a green
According to Blakenship, construction
has just begun on the course and the only
thing visible, presently, are the markers
which define the layout that were put down
by the surveyors The next thing that will
happen will be the work done by the
bulldozers. The earlier work had to do with
sketching out the general run of the course
and this has a lot to do with the degree of
difficulty the course will eventually have.
He explained that an average nine-
hold course would have two par-five holes,
ranging from about 400 to 600 yards, two
par-three holes ranging between 100 to 200
yards and the rest par-four holes averaging
350 to 400 yards Then you would add in
sand traps for degrees of difficulty.
The green construction is one of the
most important parts and involves first
bulldozing a hole and then filling it with
large rocks, dirt, pea gravel, top soil and
finally a solid sod which is grown from a
strain of Bermuda grass which can stand
up to the requirements of a golf course.
Blakenship points out that building a cour-
se is very exspensive. The greens alone
will cost between $18,000 and $20,000.
They do not expect the extra nine
holes to be completed for a couple of years
yet, but when it is, the Blakenships will be
seeing a lot of it since when they retire they
plan to be living along side the course.

MAN WITH A GREENS THUMB--Bob
- Blankenship is the General Man-
ager of the Roayal Greens golf
course. Blankenship says, there is a
lot to keeping a course up to par,
even if it's nothing more than just
staying ahead of the cut worms that
can completely destroy a green
overnight.

If your a golfer in the Cleveland-Lake
Livingston area it’s very likely your famili-
ar with the Royale Greens Golf Course at
Cape Royale near Lake Livingston of FM
224.
The nine hole course is in a hilly area
near the lake with the fairways and greens
amongst the pines. The course offers in
abundance one of the additional delights
that goes along with the game, and that’s
the opportunity to commune with nature
