There was an elevator or lift to

I am told there was a sign over
the front door that said. "The

have had something to do with
buggy riders in the moon light.

Brian, Peak of Swenson
Ranch Competes at
Brazos Valley Gathering
John Anderson had a perfect
weekend at the Brazos Valley
Fall Gathering.
As the ranch manager at
Muleshoe Ranch, Anderson
spends his days working with
cattle and horses. He said the
events of the rodeo actually do
occur on the ranch. "Every-
thing we've done, we do at
some time or another." he said.
The rodeo consisted of five
events ranging from bro.nc
riding to wild cow milking.
The event that drew the big-
gest response from (he crowd
was wild cow milking w here a
mother cow is separated from
her calf all day long. W hen the
cow is released, one cowboy
ropes it around the head and the
others charge in. grabbing it by
the head and tail. With the cow
secure, a fourth team member
has to milk the cow into a
longneck bottle. To complete
the time, the milk is rushed back
to a judge who turns the bottle
over. If no milk comes out. no
lime is given.
Brian Peak a worker at the
Swenson Ranch in Stamford
competed and said the events.
including the cow milking, ac-
tually do occur on the ranch.
"A lot of it does," he said with
a laugh Peak said his favorite
event is the one he does solo
— bronc riding. While sitting
on top of a massive, angry
horse may seem odd to some.
Peak said it w as a natural choice
for him. In fact, when he starts
to the event, the first thing he
does is try to make the bronco
even madder. "I kick him in the
belly, that’s what I do." he said.
W hile he has had some bumps
and bruises while competing.
Peak said he has no fear when
riding. "I'm not scared; I’ve
never been hurt." he said, "just
my pride getting dumped off."
After two days of competi-
tion. the Masterson Ranch
came out on top of the stand-
ings and earned a trip to the
WRCA national finals in Ama-
rillo and Swenson Ranch came
in 2nd with B&S Cattle Com-
pany in 3rd. One of the stars
and the youngest competitor in
the rodeo was 16-year-old Pat
Butler. Despite his young age.
Butler also competed in the
bronc riding.
