TEXAS CITY — In a game that had few mis-
takes, it was a misjudged fly ball by Vidor that
proved to be the difference as Barbers Hill took
the first game of the best of three CFlass 4A bi-
district series over the Pirates with a 1-0 win.
With one on and one out in the top of the third,
Derek Hulsey lifted a double over the head of
right fielder Jay Nixon who played the ball too
shallow. Hulsey’s doubled placed runners on sec-
ond and third and set up the only run of the game
on a sacrifice fly by Colby Townley.

lights you never know what can happen but that is

BAYTOWN — Lee senior Ruben
Jaramillo will have the chance to pursue a
lifelong dream next year when he suits up
for Northwood University in Dallas.
Jaramillo is a two-year member of the Lee
varsity and saw time at pitcher and first
base this season. Jaramillo plans on taking
advantage of the opportunity that has been
presented to him.
“They are going to give me a chance to
show what I can do,” Jaramillo said. “I
enjoy playing the game. It’s pretty much my
life right now. Baseball keeps me motivated
to do well in school and stay out of trouble.”
Northwood is a member of the Red River
Conference in NAIA. The Knights went 17-
31 this season and 7-7 in conference. In the
lenge tomorrow.”
Vidor served notice on the Eagles (23-5-1) that
the game would be a battle to the end in the sec-
ond inning working out of a bases loaded hole
with no outs. Smith experienced control problems
and hit the first three batters that he faced. They
would be the only free passes he gave up, After a
conference on the mound Smith induced a ground
ball by Alex Rocha that the Pirates (21-8) convert-
ed into a double play. A groundout to second base
by Kyle McDonald ended the threat with the
Eagles stranding two runners. Barbers Hill strand-
ed seven runners in the contest.

DEER PARK — After watching their team control
most of the game, Sterling fans could only watch in
disbelief as Deer Park rallied from a 5-0 deficit to
defeat the Rangers, 6-5, in 10 innings Friday night.
The win gives Deer Park a 1-0 edge in their best-
of-3 bi-district playoff series. Game 2 will be at
Sterling at 4:30 p.m. today, with a third game, if
necessary, 30 minutes after Game 2.
The Deer (26-5) won the game in the bottom of
the 10th, when Nick Emmons’ drive to the fence in
right-center plated Brennan Wrobleski from second
base with the winning run.
Wrobleski had reached on a two-out bunt single,

LEAGUE CITY — The Barbers
Hill Lady Eagles are on a mission to
win the 4A
4A SOFTBALL state softball
championship,
but watching
the squad dur-
ing the daylight hours might be diffi-
cult in the near future, because they
learned a valuable lesson Friday night:
the nighttime is the right time.
After dropping the second game of
their best-of-3 series, 2-0, against
Angleton in 90-degree temperatures,
the Lady Eagles (33-3) erupted for 3
first-inning runs in the much-cooler
nightcap, then watched as staff ace
Chandler Hall twirled a 2-hit shutout
of the Ladycats en route to a 4-0 victo-
ry and a berth in next week’s regional
quarterfinals.
“We haven’t had any real humidity
lately”, BH head coach Kirk Hall said.
“We did a little hitting at school, then
came over here on an air-conditioned
bus. Then we got off and they hit a
wall. It was the strangest thing I’ve
ever seen. They weren’t moving
around in the dugout, and a couple of
girls got nauseated. They weren’t play-
ing good at all, and Angleton was play-
ing really well. The humidity really got
us. In the second game we got a little
breeze and they really got revived.”
After being shut out and held to only
three hits in the first game, Barbers
Hill jumped on Angleton ace Bayley
Wagener for 5 first inning hits.
Lexi Stephens led off with a single,
and then promptly scored on a double
by Alexa Lyday. After Hall’s double
plated Lyday for a 2-0 margin, consec-
utive singles by Katie Stripling and
Jana Creel loaded the bases leading to
a fielder’s choice by Leah Trousdale
that brought Stripling home for a 3-0
lead. “They knew they were going to

Hales pitches BH to opening win
no excuse,” Vidor"head
coach Kyle Green said.
Barbers Hill ace Ross
Hales was credited with
the win in a 2-hit shutout.
The junior struck out 10 and walked one while
hitting two batters. Jonathan Smith was the hard
luck loser for Vidor. Smith gave up the one earned
run on six hits and struck out four, hitting three
batters.
“Ross pitched well but we continued to struggle
offensively,” BH head coach Gil Stalbaum said.
“Both teams played well defensively, they are
solid and we knew they were coming ftto the
game. You always want to win the first one but
they didn’t throw their ace so it will be a chal-
Sterling junior Brett Marshall, the fourth Ranger
pitcher in the game. Marshall had entered in the
eighth in relief of Chase Dempsay, and had thrown
two scoreless innings.
The loss wasted a solid effort by RSS starter
Hunter Cervenka, who was lifted with a 5-1 lead for
Colton Pitkin after giving up a leadoff single in the
sixth to Sam Padgett. Cervenka allowed two runs
