FRANK & EARNEST® by Bob Thaves
ASTROGRAPH
BY BERNICE BEDE OSOL
This should be a very lucky, pro-
ductive day for you, primarily
through the efforts of persons with
whom you’ll be involved, rather
than through your own dint. Don’t
get in the way.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)—
Your skills as a negotiator or mid-
dle person are likely to be superior
to those of your peers. You’ll know
how to put something together for
everyone's benefit, including your
own.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19)-If
you are subjected to some unex-
pected shifts in circumstances, go
with the flow. Changes tend to
work out for your ultimate benefit
in a most fortunate way; just ride
things out.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20)-An
entrepreneurial friend may give
you new and valuable information
that could prove fortunate. Watch
for any tip that comes from a per-
son with the Midas touch.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)-If
you’ve been anxious to advance an
important matter relating to your
work or career, make the neces-
sary changes. Luck will be your
booster rocket.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) —
Developments where elements of
cooperation and congeniality play
an intricate role in success or fail-
ure should work out rather well for
you. Your charm will work its won-
dsrs.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20) —
Don’t put off things that could
advance the material well-being for
yourself and your loved ones.
You’re far luckier than you would
be on most days.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) —
Conditions look especially good in
matters that require mental
prowess — with which you are
amply supplied. However, don’t
leave out charm and friendliness,
either.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — Let per-
sons who are working on your
behalf have as much of a free hand
as possible, especially in situations
where they’re trying to help you
generate additional income.
They’re lucky for you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)—
You’re presently in a brief cycle
where you could be luckier than
usual concerning your new, cre-
ative ventures. If you’re working on
an enterprise, try to get it air-
borne.
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23) - A
happy surprise could be in store,
enabling you to achieve new and
previously unreachable heights. It’ll
come from something that’s been
ongoing and unbeknownst to you.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)—
There is a possibility you could put
something together with a group
that would turn out to be quite •
lucky for you. It may involve your
work or that which governs most
of your time.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) —

Author Noelie Altito claimed, “The
shortest distance between two points
is under construction.” Most of you will
agree with that.
Shortly you will agree that there is
one declarer-play option that usually
makes short work of bringing home a
contract. It is highlighted by this deal.
How should South plan the play in four
spades after West leads the club
queen to dummy’s king?
South’s two-dub rebid was New
Minor Forcing, an artificial inquiry
promising at least game-invitational val-
ues. When North showed three-card
spade support, South jumped to game
in that strain. (Note that three no-
trump by North fails after a heart to
Wests king and a heart ducked by East
to keep communication with his part-
ner.)
A diamond lead would defeat four
spades, but who would find that short-
suit lead, given North’s opening bid?
After the club-queen start, South
must resist the temptation to take a
spade finesse at trick two. If he does,
West can win with his king and return a
spade. Then dedarer, if he pulls the
last spade, should lose one spade and
three hearts.
How can South avoid losing three
heart tricks? By trumping his third
heart on the board. He immediately
plays a heart. Let’s assume West takes
declarer’s jack with the king and shifts ’
to a trump. Declarer wins in either
hand and plays the heart queen to
East’s ace. East will return a trump, but
South rises with his ace and trumps his
last heart on the board.
Keep an eye open for the possibility
of constructing a route to ruff in the
shorter trump hand.
