many of your ideas will be quite
good. However, when it comes to
implementing them, you could be
inflicted with a severe case of pro-
crastination.
GEMINI (May 21-June 20)-
Miscalculations in your dealings
can be rectified, but things will
never be like new again. You can
fix all the dents, but the metal will
have been weakened; be prepared
to treat things gently.
CANCER (June 21-July 22) -The
later it gets in the day, the greater
your lack of judgment in evaluating
critical matters, so don’t put things
off. Make all-important assess-
ments early on — when you are
well rested.

ASTROGRAPH
BY BERNICE BEDE OSOL

several different people. You’ll

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) —
Many times your hunches are
strong, reliable allies, but that’s
not likely to be the case at this
time — so don’t bank on them.
View all your dealings pragmatical-
ly, especially important matters.
PISCES (Feb. 20-March 20) —
Think twice about getting involved
in a joint venture with an individual
who can afford to lose should
things go south. You’ll be the one
who is hurt if you can’t take the
loss.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) — You will
do quite well with whatever you
take on, but only if you don’t let
your ego^get in the way. Don’t pre-

VIRBO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)-
Today’s activities might offer some
pleasant reprieves from the pres-
sures of the day. However, be
careful when having a good time;
you don’t want to forget about the
costs.
UBRA(Sept. 23-Oct. 23) —
You’ll handle difficult assignments
rather easily because you’re pre-
pared. Yet, when it comes to the
easy tasks that you believe can be
done blindfolded, that’s when
you’re likely to screw up.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 22)—
Your gregarious mood will provide
many enjoyable interactions and
conversations with others, but
there is a word of warning: You
could inadvertently say things you
don’t want repeated.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 23-Dec. 21) - ARIES (March 21-April 19) - If
Keep your expectations within rea- you’re involved in something for

You must look at
both hands first
Czech playwright and president Vaclav
Havel wrote, “The cliche organizes life;
it expropriates people’s identity; it
becomes ruler, defense lawyer, judge,
and the law.”
We, of course, avoid cliches like the
plague. And at the bridge table we
avoid signaling at trick one until we
have first taken the dummy and our
hand into account.
In this deal, you are East, looking at
your hand and North's. You are
defending against four spades. West
leads the diamond four, and declarer
calls for the ace from the board. How
would you plan the defense? In partic-
ular, which card would you play under
dummy’s ace?
Note your one-diamond overcall in
preference to a takeout double. It is
very dangerous to double when short
in an unbid mqjor, especially spades. If
you had had a third spade, you would
have made a takeout double.
You have to find four defensive tricks.
Logically, these probably need to be
one spade, two hearts and one dia-
mond. But this means that when West
wins a trump trick, he must find the
heart shift. But how can you get West
to switch to a heart?
At trick one, you must not make the
“normal” play of the diamond king;
instead, you must drop a discouraging
two. (An alternate approach is to play
the queen, which theoretically denies
the king. West, placing South with king-
doubleton of diamonds, would then
have no reason to continue the suit.)
If West sees your signal, when he gets
in with the spade king at trick two, a
heart switch should stand out like a
miniskirt in a monastery.
