Some of these statistics that you quoted

One reason why homeowners aren’t

because either the insurance on the homes

This letter is in response to Leslie
Sherman’s letter regarding the attitude of
FTTiine to start bringing troops home. In
I less than a month, the U.S. ambas-
JL sador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker, and Gen.
David Petraeus, the chief military comman-
der in Iraq, will issue a report explaining the
situation there and whether President Bush’s
military “surge” has made any progress.
We cannot imagine Petraeus’ assessment
will be anything if not upbeat. While Gen.
Petraeus the top military guy in Iraq, he
has a bdss back in Washington, D.C., who
wants to hear as rosy an.assessment as possi-
ble. But that could be a tall order for
Petraeus if he attempts to be even moderately
honest in his analysis of the situation in Iraq.
The real purpose of the U.S. military surge
in Iraq was intended to provide a secure
enough environment that the Iraqi people
could figure out how to run their own coun-
try so we could finally leave. ...
A rosy assessment from Petraeus next
month won’t change the fact that Maliki’s
government is a dysfunctional mess. At
some point very soon, we hope the United
States must turn its focus to getting out of
Iraq in the best possible way rather than
clinging to the idea that our continued pres-
ence there will magically grow a govern-
ment with which we are happy.

Saving the lost with rock?

roving success. I wouldn’t know about the
lost being saved with by a rock group as ,
those who deem themselves “Christians”
because of a church alliance being brought
closer to God.” I do know for a fact .
Christianity had its beginnings in the Holy
Land of Israel-in Jerusalem. They were first
called “Christians” at Antioch-Christianity-
the sect-most spoken against then and now-
did not originate in Rome or Nicene, so
many, many who call themselves Christians
aren’t really Christians at all, they are church-
goers. So, David Bloom, I’m sure.the concert
was a feather in the caps of the church
alliance group-groups from Baytown,
Highlands, and Mont Belvieu-for God the

Summer Fest 07.
’ Aug. 25,2007,1 believe something
very excitihg-happened in my home
town called Baytown. People came
, from the north, south, east and west
to gather at the Bay Area Summer
, Fest 07, event at the San Jacinto Mall
, parking lot. I know people that
j; ■ came from Katy and Houston.
Others came from Galveston County.
Van loads of youth streamed in from
the greater
| Beaumont area.
I A pastor from
I Beaumont called
I me on the-Monday
I after the event and
I said, “We brought
I dozens of youth
I from our church
and that our youth
group was
extremely blessed
by the event.” The
pastor continued to
say, “There must
have been over
three thousand people at Summer
Fest!”
The Music was exciting, melodic,
and praiseworthy! I was an eyewit-
ness of the crowd being very respon-
sive to every group that performed.
Jamakis did a great job as an open-
ing act. They really got the crowd
moving. Then the Church on the
Rock Praise Band moved center
stage as they led people in celebra-
tive praise to the Lord. It is a
Biblical truth that when God’s people
begin to praise the Lord, that God
comes and dwells in the midst of the
praises of His people'. As I stated all
along, “Summer Fest 07 is a God
Thing.” For sure God blessed us
with good weather, a great concert
and a large crowd of people that was
very well behaved. Thank God!
About 7 p.m. at the Summer Fest
event, a group from Beaumont
called, Red Airplanes, took the stage
and mesmerized the audience with a
fresh contemporary gospel sound
that simply rocked the house.' “They
were wonderful,” said one of the pas-
tors back stage and he continued to
say, “We must get them back to
Baytown!”.
The next performer, Jez, also did a
great job. He sang in both English
and Spanish. Toward the end of his
performance, he encouraged the
young people to make sure their
heart was right with the Lord and to
continue on that same pathway. It
was a tender moment as the audience
was very stilL It seemed like heaven
kissed the earth and the audience was
touched by an Almighty God.
Qf course, Tree 63, the Dove
Award winning group from South
Africa blew us all away.
They gave a perforriiance beyond
my expectation. John Ellis of Tree
63 was the lead guitar player and
lead vocalist. I’ve told several peo-
ple, “He was not a one man show,
but he almost was!” They were
absolutely great!
The best part of the whole evening
was when my daughter briefly
stepped backstage to get my atten-
tion. She said, “Dad, look at your
wife! She is jumping up and down
on the front row with all the
teenagers!” She was dancing and
lifting her hands high toward the sky.
She wasn’t going to let anyone out
scream her!
I laughed not at her, but laughed
for joy because she was having more
fun than anybody!
Of course, after the event my 60
year old body was tired and worn.
Barbara and I made it home to sit
outside on the porch and continue to
reflect upon the excitement of this
inaugural Summer Fest evening.
My wife, Barbara had told me for
several days that she was having ter-
rible pain in her right shoulder. She
said, “The pain at times was unbear-
able,” She continued to say, “The next

A eral of the United States ends an
embarrassing tenure.
It has been clear for some time to almost
everyone except, perhaps, the president of
the United States that Gonzales had no busi-
ness as the chief law enforcement official of
the United States....
It will take historians years to uncover the
damage Gonzales has done. At the very
least his successor will face intense scrutiny
as members of Congress and the American
people look to see if the new attorney gener-
al sees his duty as ensuring justice or, like
Gonzales, finds a higher “duty” in protect-
ing the political career of the president.
In the end, that is where Gonzales likely
did the most damage....
Gonzales, in slavishly putting the interests
of the president ahead of those of the coun-
try and the people, helped bring us danger-
ously close tg seeing the handiwork of the
founding fatners undone.
He leaves none too soon.

A good doctor /
My heart and my prayers go out to Dr.
McClellan and his family. Having been a
patient of his for the past 25-plus years and the public against pit bull dogs. '
after his taking excellent care of my daugh- i_,_ —
ters and my granddaughter, I give absolute-
ly no credence to the accusations against
him and have every confidence that his
name will be cleared.
If we lose Dr. McClellan's professional
services in our community it will be a
tremendous loss to the people of Crosby
and surrounding areas, my-family included.
Whatever happened to innocent until

Crosby fines of his own fenced backyard, got on
top o f hi s dog ho use and came over the
fence while my father was mowing our
backyard. -
He growled at my dad and my dad did

self. Because the pit bull was charging my
dad, my dad was prepared to use that
lawnmower however he needed to in order
to protect himself.
Luckily, he didn’t have to use" it because
the dog ran out of our backyard through
the gate, giving my father enough time to
get in the house. When the dog ran back
into our backyard, my father ran out and
closed the gate from the front yard, and
we waited for the city to come and pick
up the dog. Unfortunately, after the dog
had run around our backyard for 45 min-
utes, and while on the way back to the
city dog pound, the dbg catcher got anoth-
.er call, and did not give the pit bull any
water. ■ .'
The dog died of dehydration. It was
very unfortunate, because we did not want
that dog to die. However, this dog was
raised properly, and it goes to show that
he did have the mean streak in him, and
