CHARLOTTE. N.C. — A project
sparked by North Carolina-bred
singer Charlie Daniels has collected
thousands of dollars in donated
musical instruments for troops in
Iraq.
Daniels donated one of his own
instruments to “Operation
Heartstrings” earlier this year when
he learned that soldiers didn't have
guitars for church services. He asked Surreal Life” and became engaged
guitar manufacturers to do the same. “1U*' n“i”
“We never envisioned this much

Let it be
cold, OK?
Let me ask you something.
Maybe three somethings.
Alrighty?
After a scorching summer
(you should’ve listened to me
and Albert Gore when we '
warned you about Global
Warming), aren’t you ready for
some consistently cooler weath-
er? Even cold weather?
Particularly at
Thanksgiving/Christmas time?
Let’s see a show of hands.
Let’s see. One, two ... OK,
there’s a couple of dissenters -
there’s always one or two in
every crowd, don’t you know? -
but I can see the overwhelming
majority of you are voting in
favor of the nice brisk weather
we’ve experienced for most of
the last week or so.
Furthermore, it’s just as 1
“deduced,” as Police Chief
Byron Jones likes to say. See, 1
knew in advance how you’d
vote. You don’t want anymore
summer-type weather, particu-
larly in the midst of this won-
derful holiday season. Me nei-
ther.
I know what you’re thinking
(I always do). You’re thinking
that temperatures in the upper
30s or low 40s at night and in
the mid-to-upper 50s during the
day would be welcomed and
embraced. You’re thinking that
there’ll be plenty of time to
complain about how cold, and
wet, and miserable it is come
January.
But that’s weeks down the
Weather Road, and it was warm
on Thanksgiving Day, for gosh
sakes. It’s not supposed to be
that v/ay (you should’ve listened
to me and Albert Gore when we
warned you about Global •
Warming). Not that you can’t
thank the Big Editor in The Sky
for all your blessings on an
almost summer-like
Thanksgiving Day.
If it continues this way, how
on Earth will we be able to
roast chestnuts in an open fire
four weeks hence?
I’m making a big fuss about
the weather because - again -
the television weatherpersons
are ticking me off. They seemed
awfully happy that it was going
to be warm on Thanksgiving.
They must have pea gravel for
brains. (My apologies to pea
gravel everywhere.)
It’s well-documented that I
don’t watch local TV news. It
drives me batty. And if the news
and sports weren’t bad enough,
I go over the edge if, by chance,
I catch a weather forecast.
I let my guard down earlier
this week while awaiting the
start of a late Razorback basket-
ball game from Hawaii. I actu-
ally watched a weather report
on the station that has that doc-
tor guy offering forecasts (and
with about the same accuracy
shown by certain members of
The Sun Football Poll). 1
should’ve known better.
The whole news crew seemed
almost euphoric (hat it was
going to be warmer on
Thanksgiving (booooool). Doc
even said something about
being “delighted,” as I remem-
ber. What’s up with that?
During our first cold snap of
the Season, which I thought
would never get here, I also
made the mistake of watching a
weather forecast and this bunch
did pretty much the same thing.
It was going to warm up, they
smiled - and after months and
months of hot, hot weather.
Jeez, I thought they were going
to break out in song and dance.
Made me mad then, too.
Why can’t they just try and
guess what the weather is going
to be and leave the editorial
bloviating to me and other peo-
ple who know what the heck
we’re talking about? Better still,
why do I punish myself person-
ally by watching?
Using the highly scientific
poll I conducted for this col-
umn, I proved folks enjoy the
cooler weather. So let it snow,
let it snow, let it snow!
Rocket man to wed
LONDON — Elton John says he
and his partner, David Furnish, will
tie the knot next month under
Britain’s new civil union law.
The ceremony will be held Dec.
21, the effective date of the legisla-
tion creating partnerships to give
gays many of the legal protections
available to married heterosexuals.
“It’ll be a very small family affair,
and then in the evening there’ll be a
soiree somewhere, which we have
yet to work out,” John told Attitude
magazine in an interview released
Thursday.
The only guests at the ceremony
itself, he said, will be his parents and
Furnish’s parents.
Furnish, a Canadian-born film-
maker, and John have been together
for 12 years, and John has publicly
credited Furnish with helping him to
overcome addictions to alcohol and
drugs. The pop star was previously
married to studio technician Renate
Blauel.
