“It angers me a little bit when 1 hear that,” Fred
Funk said Wednesday. “But it’s true. When 1 come
here ... what’s the name of that movie, ’One in a
Million’? OK, so 1 have a chance. But a medium
to short hitter has to have a ridiculous short game
to contend.”
Woods and Mickelson probably have never had
a conversation in the champions locker room like
the one that took place early this week downstairs
where the regulars hang out.
Paul Goydos hasn’t been to the Masters in 11
years, and he was asking Scott Verplank what club
he hit into a certain hole. Verplank never gave him
a chance to say which hole, probably because it
didn’t matter.
“Wood,” he replied.

The Lady Eagle softball
team cruised to a 14-0 win
over Galena Park Tuesday
night to improve to 24-2 on
the year.
Junior Chandler Hall got the
win in three innings of work
giving up two hits and striking
out seven to improve to 17-2.
Alexa Palomino worked two
innings of hitless relief.
Lexi Stephens led the way at
the plate going 3-4. Alexa
Lyday was 2-3 and Katie
Stripling was 2-2. Karrah
Campbell also added a two-
run homer.
AUGUSTA, Ga. — Tiger Woods doesn’t own
the lowest score on the back nine at Augusta
National, nor the most memorable. But that 30 he
posted in the first round in 1997 sent him to a
, record-setting victory at the Masters that ultimate-
ly changed many things.
Starting with the golf course.
“There were two par 5s, and I could handle
those,” Woods recalled. “No. 17 was short at the
time. No. 11 was short at the time. No. 14 was
short at the time, only a 3-wood and a sand
wedge.” ,
With each hole description, his smile grew
wider until he was in full laughter.

BAYTOWN — Coming into
the 2006-2007 season LC head
coach Jason

Kalei Gora it

Gora stepped on
campus as the highest rated
American ever to play for the
Lady Rebels and has not disap-
pointed as she has helped lead
Lee to a 15-2 record and a num-
ber two ranking in the nation.
“As far as skill wise goes I’ve
never had an American dictate the
game like she does,” Haynes said.
“She has a different level. She’s
always been very good and this
year she is learning how to have a
voice and own everything around
her.”
As a high school athlete, Gora
was a three time state champion
and four-time player of the year.
Competing mainly against compe-
tition on the west coast she was
rated the 57th in the United States
as a National Junior.
“My senior year I didn’t know
what I was going to do,” Gora
said. “My parents thought it
would be better if I went away to
play tennis. I went and looked at
Cleveland State. The facilities
were ok and I liked the team but
it was to far away. I also looked at
San Diego State and a lot of
schools in California. I thought it
would be better to play at the
junior college level starting off.”
Gora started her career at Lee
strong placing third in singles in
the ITA Small College
There is nothing short about Augusta National
now except the distance between the practice
green and the first tee. The.course has been
stretched more than a quarter-mile since Woods’
first victory, and each change seems to reduce the
number of realistic contenders.
That explains why Woods and Phil Mickelson
have won five of the last six Masters and are the
heavy favorites when the 71st edition of this tour-
nament begins Thursday.
And maybe that’s why some of the shorter hit-
ters wonder if they’re only here to smell the flow-
ers.
The annual assumption is that only a dozen or
guys can think about a green jacket, a familiar list
of power players that range from Ernie Els to
Vijay Sjngh, from Henrik Stenson to Geoff
pitcher posted a 4-3 win, allowing
two earned runs on six hits. She
fanned five batters and walked five.
She also scored two runs.
Tallent also earned her second save
of the year against Millsaps. In the
7-3 Hendrix win, Tallent walked two
hitters and fanned one in three
innings of work. She did not allow a
single hit or earned run. She was
alsol-for-3 with a double at the
plate, driving home two and scoring
one. Hendrix is 11-21 overall and 4-
4 in the Southern Collegitite Athletic
Conference. ...
Houston Baptist University fresh-
man pitcher Kristi Malpass earned
her 10th victory of the year against
Prairie View A&M University.

advance to the regional tournament.
Junior Sarah Baker, who was the
only member of the team with varsity
experience, led Anahuac in the district
tournament with a fifth place finish.
“Sarah has been a consistent golfer
all season long and she continues to
work hard,” AHS girls head coach
Vicki Vardell said.
Baker will be joined by junior
Whitney Fountain, sophomore Kim
DeHoyos, freshman Emily Baker and
Dominique Williams.
“The best we can determine this is
the first time in a long time that an
Anahuac girl golfer or team has quali-
fied for the regional tournament,”
Vardell said. “Emily, Whitney,
Dominique and Kim are new to the
game but all have been working
extremely hard to improve their scores
and all have* helped contribute to the
teams success. The girls are looking
forward to their trip to Regionals.”
Guillory will represent Anahuac after
his fourth place finish at the District

tournament. On the first day of com-
petition, Guillory shot an 85 at the
Chambers Bounty Golf Course. On the
second day of the tournament the
sophomore shot a 90 at Wildwood Golf
Course in Warren. Guillory’s two-day
total was a 175.
The Regional Tournament will be
held on April 23rd and 24th.

Any softball player knows that
softball is usually a low-scoring
affair.
A pitcher only has to make one
mistake to the wrong hitter and it
usually spells the end. In the fourth
inning of Texas State University’s
game with the University of Texas-
San Antonio, UTSA pitcher
Amanda Nikolenko made a mistake.
And Baytown Sterling grad Leah
Boatright made her pay.
She swatted a pitch over the left-
field fence with a runner on base.
The two-run shot gave the Lady
Bobcats a 2-1 lead. Neither
Boatright, nor the Bobcats knew it
at the timef but it was enough to win
the contest. Boatright finished the
contest 1-2.
“After I hit it, I felt confident,”
said Boatright. “It just felt really
