reports of a romance between Pitt

In interviews, Aniston, 36, has

„ It seems highly appropriate,
.I’m thinking, to talk a little base-
ball here. Not as a once-famous
sportswriter, but as a fan.
Beginning with: How ’bout
them Astros? With their flair for
' the dramatic, they’ve obviously
■ put the fun back into what can
sometimes be a slow, boring
sport. But do they have to
squeeze every ounce of sanity
from our collective brains and
every ounce of energy from the
depths of our collective giz-
zards?
Apparently they do.
I’ve been watching or cover-
ing baseball for awhile now —
what with my advancing age and
all — and I’m not sure I’ve ever
witnessed a contest like Game 5,
when Albert Pujols — the
absolute best player in the uni-
verse — rocketed a home run
(last seen over Highlands) that
stole a sure Astros victory and
.completely deflated a boisterous
home crowd just waiting to cele-
brate the team’s first pennant
ever. If there was ever a recorded
case of a bomb bursting in air,
that was it.
But no matter. It will be the
Astros, the Houston Astros, in
the World Series Saturday night.
The Chicago White Sox, a fran-
chise that can’t even spell the
word “socks” correctly, will fur-
nish the opposition. Sure Phil
Gamer’s outfit had to go back to
St. Louis to win the National
League title. Fireballing Roy
Oswalt, who should win the Cy
Young Award but probably
won’t, saw to that Wednesday
night. Take that, Cardinals!
Speaking of the Cardinals,
which I do reverently, it wasn’t
easy pulling against them. 1 go
back more than 50 years as a
Redbirds fan. Like a lot of oth-
ers, I came by it honestly.
Long before Houston had a
major league team, there were
the Houston Buffs, a Texas
.League entry that brought much
joy to this area and to little poots
like myself personally. For many
years the Buffs were owned by
the Cardinals, so it was plain
natural that St. Louis would be
our favorite team in the “bigs.”
Many a night as a Little
Leaguer I’d crawl into bed with
Loel Passe. Not literally, of
course, but Loel was the Buffs
'radio announcer (this was in the
pre-television days) and I’d go to
sleep listening to Houston whip
the Beaumont Exporters, or the
■ Shreveport Sports, or the Forth
-■Worth Cats.
“Hot ziggity dog and good old
sassafras tea!” Loel would shout
when one of the Buffs did some-
thing spectacular. Which was
often in mine and Loel’s eyes.
Many of those same Houston
stars would end up as bona fide
Cardinals a year or two later. j
Thusly, how could you not pull
for them all these years?
But like millions of others, I
„ wanted the Astros to get to the
World Series, even if it meant
beating “my” Cardinals. I was
. willing to sacrifice for Biggio
and Bagwell, who’ve meant so
much to the hometown team.
I just wish they wouldn’t make
it so difficult. I just wish they’d
quit taking my breath away.
Now, though, they’ve reached
the ultimate. The Sox don’t have
a chance. There hasn’t been this
much excitement in Houston
since probably the opening of
the Astrodome, or the old I
■ Houston Oilers “Luv you Blue!”
days, or the election of Lee P
Brown as mayor.
Like everyone else in these
parts, I’m all caught up in it. My
■heart may be saying,
“Cardinals!” but my head is
yelling, “Astros!” Trouble is, if
.they keep winning the way they
r have been, I’m not sure my heart
can stand it. I
your story.
