It has been a great pleasure and honor for me and my
other colleagues to know a distinguished gentleman
known as Dr. Atef Rizkallah.
Among the many other fine qualities this physician
had, the one that always stood out for me, was his
finest humanistic nature you would ever find in any
human being. He would go out of his way to help the
underprivileged and those in need, just like a true
American.
On any given day, if you are at San Jacinto Methodist
Hospital between 5 to 6 p.rh., take a walk in the
hallway between 2 West and 2 East Medical floors
and there you would find a gentleman in his mid-
fifties with broad shoulders and an ear-to-ear smile
on his face involved in conversations with patients,
patients’ family members or the staff. He made every
one feel that they have a “special” relationship with
him. That is Dr. Rizkallah. Respect, passion and
caring, if you combine these three words together
then you may have a chance to know Dr. Rizkallah.
His unfortunate demise has created a vacuum in this
community that can never be filled. My heart goes
out to his family and friends at this irreplaceable loss.

Student from 16 JROTC pro-
grams around Texas came to
Sterling High School this week-
end to compete in a skills meet.
It was called “Quintana,” which
was the street between the fifth
and sixth battalions in the military
camp of a Roman legion. It was
on that road where soldiers prac-
ticed their military exercises.
Competition included rifle
teams, color guard, physical fit-
ness, obstacle course and acade-
mics. More than 500 cadets were
present to compete. Hastings High
School JROTC instructor Master
Gunnery Sgt. Polk said the
JROTC program is important
because it instills discipline in
students.
“It instills discipline, re.spect
for themselves and others, it
teaches them the value of citizen-
ship,” Polk said. ‘‘And not only to '
be a citizen, but an American - it
gives them a chance to experi-
ence leadership.”
Polk said his team won the
overall competition last year, and
he was expecting a victory in sev-
eral events, if not the whole com-
