Attempted robbery
Baytown police were called
to the 2400 block of Missouri
Street around 1:30 a.m.
Wednesday on an aggravated
attempted robbery report.
The homeowner told police
that he and a friend were vis-
iting on his screened-in porch
when a man entered the
porch, pointed a gun at the
two men and demanded
money. At one point, the
criminal got fired one shot
into the room, but no one
was injured. When the home-
owner told the armed man he
would go get money, the man
ran away. The would-be rob-
ber was described as a
Hispanic male, standing
about 5-foot, 6-inches tall to

man has a stocky build and
weighs between 155 and 165

The Santanas have made a
practice of leaving Baytown
when instructed and heading
to Crosby, where Santana’s
wife works as an insurance
agent. .......
“Crosby is far enough away ents, so each will know
from the coast to protect us
from the storm surge and the
office building is very sturdy
and structurally sound,” said
Santana.
Santana recalled Hurricane Amegy Bank’s Senior Vice
Rita in 2005, when inade-
quate planning forced the
family to leave their house
unarmored against the wind.
“If your plan is to board
your house up, have a plan
and have materials early” he
said.
Fortunately for the
Santanas, Rita’s damage to
their home was kept to a min-
imum.
“That feeling of leaving it
like that was terrible,” he
said. “I get better prepared
each year.”
As Vola said, “If an 8-year-

tions.

example of modifying guide-

FORT COLLINS, Colo.
(AP) - A noted hurricane
researcher is predicting
eight hurricanes will form
in the Atlantic this year, and
says four of them will be
major.
Tuesday’s forecast by
William Gray and his team
of researchers at Colorado
State University calls for a
very active season, with 15
named storms, including
tropical storrr) Arthur,
which formed on May 31. .
Last month, the NatiorfaT
Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration forecast 12
to 16 named storms, includ-
ing six to nine hurricanes.
The team said there is a
69 percent chance that at
least one major hurricane
will make landfall some-
where on the U.S. coastline,
compared to the long-term
average probability of 52
percent.
Now that hurricane season
has officially begun, pre-
paredness checklists are
afloat and informational
forums are cropping up
everywhere.
“Hurricane season is like
tax time,” Baytown
Emergency Management
Coordinator Bill Vola told the
Chamber of Commerce on
Tuesday. “It comes every year
and we know it’s coming. We
have to be prepared.”
While that’s all well and
good, many Baytonians may
"be wondering if their leaders
are “practicing what they
preach.”
Others may just be looking
for guidance in formulating
their own preparedness plan.
Whatever the cause for
curiosity, Baytown’s officials
and community leaders do
have plans, and urge us to
have one too.
Mayor Stephen DonCarlos
said that while he will report
to the Emergency Operations
Center himself, the rest of his
family plan centers around a
specific meeting destination.
Following north-flowing
evacuation traffic,
DonCarlos’ wife will be trav-
eling to the family farm in
Jefferson for refuge.
DonCarlos said the two
plan on keeping in touch via
their cell phones as long as
towers are up and running.
In the event that they can’t
get in touch, they’ll at least
know where to find one
another.
Chamber of Commerce
Board Member and “Citizen
of the Year” Gilbert Santana
said his family has worked
their plan over many times,
learning each season what
works and what doesn’t.
“My plan’s not complete
but it’s evolving,” said
Santana.
