It was the perfect situation for
father and son to coach on the

During that time, his son Neil
Weiner played for him and even
coached the freshman team while

his team to a 50-9 record since

from the team. But a helping hand

Johnny Thomas was a first-team all-state run-
ning back for Texas City last fall, rushing for
1,803 yards and 21 touchdowns.
Jeff McVaney quarterbacked Strake Jesuit to the
playoffs.
So why are they playing defense for their Bayou
Bowl team?
Because they can.
“I think they’re both easily two-way players,”
said Jason Holman, the Jersey Village assistant
who is serving as defensive coordinator for the
Texans this week.
“Of course, Jeff was in our district and I saw
the head coach at Catholic Pointe
Coupee. His teams there went 27-
18, including a 12-1 season in
2006.
Neil also served as an assistant
coach for the Louisiana All-Stars
in last year’s Bayou Bowl and was
named the team’s head coach this
year. Needing to fill an opening
on the offensive side of the ball,
Neil called his dad.
And was put on hold.
“For whatever reason, I’m the
only returning offensive coach,
and I had to find a staff,” Neil
said. “My dad was the first per-
son I called.”
In Dale’s time at Catholic High
McVaney, a 6-2,218-pounder, also played full-
back for Strake before becoming the Crusader
quarterback. He will play a similar position for
Texas State, H-back.
“Playing defense for a week is pretty fun,” he
said Wednesday during a break in the Bayou Bowl
players’ trip to Eagle Pointe Recreation Center in
Mont Belvieu.
“It’s my last show at linebacker. I’d have been
done (on defense) if I didn’t get to play in this.
Now I’ve got another week of defense.”

ceptions when he played cornerback for the

Houston came within one game of

“It feels great and it took a lot of
hard work to get there,” Dempsay said.
“Through the season 1 never really
looked at my stats. I just don’t know
what to say about it.”
Dempsay finished the season with an
8-3 record and a 2.53 earned run aver-
age. He posted 49 strikeouts and held
opponents to a .214 batting average.
Dempsay set UH freshman records in
both saves and wins and led the team
