Group to discuss making Baytown safer Monday
“There’s always been topics (on
Baytown Talk) addressing safety, but
the attack there spurred a lot of anger,”
said Jerry Cates, one of the group’s
organizers. “That tipped a lot of people
over the edge.”
Before taking their concerns to
Baytown City Council, the organizers
want to meet at least once to formulate
a plan and gather research, he said.
Although the city Is proposed budget
includes fimding for five additional
patrol officers, the group wants offi-
cials to attack crime as soon as possi-
ble, Cates said.
“They?ve made some good progress,
but we want to see immediate action,
too,” he said. “We want to get these
thugs off the streets.”
Cates, who sits on the board of direc-
tors for the Girls Fast Pitch Softball
Association, pointed out particular inci-
dents he’s seen in the last year near the
practice fields at Wayne Gray Sports
Complex.

“Something has to be done to put a
stop to this and get safety back in
Baytown.”
The group is extending an invitation
to the Monday meeting beyond
Baytown Talk. Anyone interested in the
city’s safety can attend, Cates said, but
reservations must be made by tonight.
The meeting will be held at 7 p.m.
Monday in the back room of El Toro,
