Rebels’ Mike

BAYTOWN - There are several
reasons to go watch the Lee
College basketball team, but the
best may be Mike White. White,
an NJCAA preseason second
team All-American, lives up to
the hype.
The sophomore speaks softly
and carries a big stick, and as a
result of his physical play is high-
ly sought by several major NCAA
Division I universities. White
leads Region 14 in scoring with
24,1 points per game and is fifth
in rebounding, averaging 10.4.
Tonight at 7 p.m. at home,
White will lead Lee College
against Jacksonville as the Rebels
look to improve to 2-0 in confer-
ence play. The game will be free
to the public.
“We have been fortunate to
have a few players come through
here like Mike,” LC head coach
Roy Champagne said. “Anyone
interested in basketball in the area
should be here. You are not going
to get many chances to see to see
a player like him.
“He is truly a gentle giant. He
is not a vocal guy at all.
Everybody’s defense is geared to
stop Mike. You never see him go

McGrady returns to lead Rockets to win
BY CHRIS DUHCAH

HOUSTON — Tracy McGrady is
back. Maybe how the Houston
Rockets can finally recover from
their dismal start.
Sidelined since Nov. 18 with a
back injury, McGrady returned
Tuesday night to score 25 points
and the Rockets snapped a seven-
game losing streak with a 100-85
win over the Atlanta Hawks.

CLEAR LAKE — There is one
indisputable fact in basketball —
you’ve got to make shots to win. A
coach can draw X’s and O’s until he
develops carpal tunnel syndrome, but
if the ball doesn’t go in the hole, the
team’s not going with a win.
Sterling coach Mark Patton got a
good taste of what that feels like
Tuesday night, as the Rangers managed
just 31 percent shooting from the field
in a 70-41 loss at Clear Lake. Included
in that was an 0 for 16 performance
from behind the 3-point line.
“We’re a Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
team,” Patton said. “When we shoot
well we can play with almost anybody.
Last week we beat a good Dobie team
'that’s bigger and more athletic than this
team tonight.
“But when we don’t shoot well we
come back down to earth. The bottom
line is that we’re 3-6 on the season.
That’s it.”
Despite their shooting woes, the
Rangers managed to hang around in
the first half, as they trailed only 29-20
at intermission. But Clear Lake went
on a 9-0 run to open the third quarter,
capped by a 3-pointer that Justin Kurtz
banked in, to push the lead to 38-20
with 6:32 left in the period. The
Falcons went on to lead 52-32 at the
end of the quarter.
From that point, the Rangers never
threatened again.
“We told the guys at halftime that
the first five minutes of the second
half was going to decide it,” Patton
said, “And we just couldn’t hit any
shots and Clear Lake did. They’re a
good team.”
For the game, the Falcons shot 44
percent from the field and 6 of 16 from ■
eight of nine free throws.
