Ban = less taxes
Economic impact on the
Community should be the first
priority of voters in Baytown
when they vote on Tuesday.
Has anyone stopped to think
what will happen to the sales
tax revenue if the group
“Smoke Free Baytown” gets
their way? This proposed ordi-
nance could have strong eco-
nomic impact on sales tax rev-
and a long list of others that can
certainly be harmful to their
health. They chose to apply
there and the employer chooses Coalition, which I hope that all
to hire them. I cannot remem-
ber ever having an alarm sound at before they go to the polls,
requiring me to seek shelter in
my home and turn off my air
conditioning unit because
someone lit a tobacco product.
I have had these alarms due
to petrochemical releases. Dr.
Ehlers says there is no study
that tells you living around or
working in these plants could
be harmful, even though we
have safety measures in place
such as alarms and public safe-
ty messages when there is a
have raised their liability
insurance so high that it drives
the cost of health care and
health insurance out of the
financial reach of so many,
more small business men could
afford to offer these benefits to
their employees. But that could
be an idea for another banning
ordinance issue. In the same
letter Dr. Ehlers states that busi-
nesses cannot force employees
to choose between having a job
and having a safe work environ-
ment. There are many jobs,
such as the petrochemical
industry, and construction
which are extremely dangerous
are deducted from each hotel.
The proposed ordinance cites:
Hotel and motel rooms that
are rented to guest and are des-
ignated as smoking rooms; pro-

individuals and one specific fast than 20 percent of rooms rented

ignore the healthier items that
this fast food company had
placed on their menu and said
they were going to the restau-

did not want healthier meals

story aired on national televi-
sion - New York and the

The bottom line on all these
topics is choice. You can choose
to work in an establishment that
allows smoking or you can
choose to look for different
employment You can choose to
spend your money in the same
establishment or choose not to.
Baytown has a very strict ordi-
nance on the books currently
ther with it. Small business has
a right to dictate what happens
on their property, not the health
care industry.
We have a duty to protect our
community and it is not by vot-
ing for an ordinance that will
cost too much to implicate and
monitor. Before you go vote,
read both documents - the pro-
posed ordinance and the current
American Heart Association, we ordinance. Actually the current
ordinance is better defined,

bad health risks, as the package

General Fund - helping to keep
your property tax lower, but
they also fund many other
efforts that generate dollars for
our community.
Two of those issues were just
recently passed in May — the

We, Baytonians agreed in May
Vote for the ban
I am encouraging every read-
er to vote for the ban on smok-
ing in public places next
Tuesday. Nothing could be
worse than for this issue to fail.
Just think about how awful ciga-
rette smoke smells when one is
trying to enjoy a great meal in
one of our local restaurants.
To a non-smoker, that stench
is one of the most god-awful
smells known to man. One
could only imagine how a
smoker would react to the smell
of raw sewage in a restaurant
just as he or she began to eat a
delicious meal. Well that’s how
cigarette smoke smells to u non-
smokers. It is sickening. Hasn't
got anything to do with being a
health hazard as far as I am con-
cerned.
It just plain stinks and the
sooner it goes away the better.
Do everyone (including the
smokers) a favor and vote for
the ban.
Democracy at work
I’ve read letters about the pro-
posed smoking ban that have
used the words “socialism” and
“communist dictators.” The ban
is not some government leader
trying to impose his-her personal
will on society. It’s the will of the
people. It’s called “democracy.”
Cleo Thorpe

This disease primarily affects
the lungs and gastro-intestinal
tract. With Cystic Fibrosis the
lungs tend to accrue more of a
stickier mucous than normal
lungs. This mucous in turn may
cause illnesses and may make it
more difficult to breathe. With
cigarette smoke in the air you
can only imagine how much
this effect intensifies.
I don't care if people smoke,
that is totally their decision. I
am not in any way asking peo-
ple to quit. I understand that this
is an addiction and that it is
extremely hard to stop. My only
request is that you don't do it in
closed in areas where you share
the air with me and my family.
You have your rights to smoke
but we should have our rights to
breathe smoke free air.
I keep hearing people say that
this ban is going to take away
their rights. I am not in any way
trying to do this. I am simply a
mother who wants to protect her
child from the dangers of sec-
ond hand smoke. I would think
that every parent and grandpar-
ent (smoker or non-smoker)
would want the best for their
