Openings remain ina basic police
•academy Offered for the first time this
summer by South Plains College.
The academy, scheduled June 4-
Aug. 17, is open to person^ 21 years
of age and older. Those who
successfully complete the 11-week
course will be able to take the state
peace officer licensing exam. Classes
will meet 8 a.m.-5 p.m. daily in the
SPC Law Enforcement/Petroleum
Technology Building.
Deadline to sign up is May 28.
Classes will include an overview
of the law enforcement field, basic
patrol procedures, police skills and
police services such as traffic
presentation and court presentation.
Interested applicants must take a
reading test, which will be given at 6
p.m. Monday (May 21) and 9 a.m.
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday
(May 22, 24 and 25) in the SPC
Kidance and counseling office,

the exam will be included in a $25
non-refundable fee, which will be

Academy students can live in the
Smallwood Apartments, which are
equipped with kitchenettes and room
for four persons. Housing cost is $560
a person. Meals will be available at
the SPC snack bar. A number of
restaurants are located within a short
distance of the College.

Survivors include his wife, Lois,
his mother, Elsie Avery of Levelland;
two daughters, four brothers, Robert
of Possum Kingdom Lake, Judge Don
Avery of Whitharral, Glen of Electa
and Dewayne of Lovington, N.M.;
four grandchildren; and a great-
grandchild.
Richard Teal, driving while for Rex Avery, 72
Paden, Okla. He married Theola
Wade on June 30,1925 in Weleetka.
She preceded him in death on Nov.
25,1984. He was a member of the
First Presbyterian Church in Prague,
Okla. He was a retired rancher.
Survivors include a daughter,
Nancy Wright of Levelland; three
grandchildren, Kathy Hoy of
Lubbock, Candy Baack of Lubbock
and Mitch Wright of Lubbock; and
five great-grandchildren.
The honorary pallbearers were
Harvey Wright. Mitch Wright,
Harvey Carver, Dan Hoy, Robert
Duroy and Matt Baack.
Memorial service for Irvin Lester
Sheets, 88, were at 10 a.m. Saturday
in the First Presbyterian Church with
the Rev. Dan Franks, pastor,,
officiating.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m.
Monday in the Wetumka Cemetery
under the direction of Buckley
Funeral Home in Wetumka, Okla.
Local arrangements are by George
C. Price Funeral Directors.
He died al 2:30 P.M. Friday in his
home.
He was bom in Wetumka. He
moved to Levelland in 1984 from

Sebastian, will be presented at 2 p.m.
Sunday in the Middle School
Auditorium.
The show is presented by the
Levelland Breakfast Rotary Club and
will feature the popular magician,
Sebastian.
Advance tickets have been sold but
tickets will also be available at the
door. Admission will be $4 for adults
groups during the concert There is no
admission charge to the concert.
Some of the choirs accomplish-
ments this year include winning a
sweepstakes rating in UIL Concert
and Sight Reading contest March 15
at Wayland Baptist University in
Plainview. The Levelland Choir was
the only choir with an unanimous first
division rating. They also received a
one concert and the AAA mixed choir
received a first place trophy May 4 at
the Cavalcade of Music Festival in
Colorado Springs, Colo.

Home. Masonic rites were held.
He died at 6:30 p.m. May 17.
He was a 1937 graduate of
Whitharral High School. He joined
the Army Air Corp in 1940. He
graduated from Howard Payne College
