H and FFA judging contests
The four market animal
auctions (steer, lamb and goat,
barrow and poultry (broiler and
turkey) represent animals raised
by junior exhibitors for food
sources. The animals judged as
best in each of these categories
are eligible for their individual
market auctions In 2004, the
Houston Livestock Show's junior
market auction sales were in
excess of $4.8 million.
In addition, the show hosts
one of the premier horse shows in
the country. Cutting horse events
begin with the horse division
competition on Tuesday, March
I. Competition in five different
breed of horses-Appaloosa,
Arabian and Half Arabian, Paint,
Palomino and Quarter Horse,
plus donkeys and mules, runs
March 6 to 20.
The 2005 show kicks off on
Thursday, Feb. 24 with the
World’s Championship Bar-B-
Que Contest, and runs through
Feb. 26, in the southwest Reliant
Park parking lot.
On Friday, Feb. 25, high
school seniors from 60 Texas
counties will be recognized with
the presentation of the Area Go
Texan scholarships.
Admission to Reliant Park for
the livestock and horse show,
carnival and all exhibits and
attractions, excluding the Rodeo
Houston performances and
Rodeo Uncorked! Activities, is
$6 for adults, $3 for children ages
3 to 12, and free for those ages 2
and younger.

Excitement continues to build
as thousands of Texas 4-H and
FFA members make their final
preparations before heading to
Reliant Center to exhibit their
livestock at the 2005 Houston
Livestock Show March 1-20.
A total of 162 young people
from Hockley County 4-H Clubs
and FFA Chapters will be
competing in the Houston
Livestock Show.
Among those going to
Houston are four Whitharral FFA
members, Billy Harley, Carlos
Lopez, Jon Lorenz and Scott
Kristinek, all showing barrows.
Among those going to
Houston are 17 Smyer FFA
Chapter members including
Ashley Neal, Berry Andrews,
Briana Henley, Brittany Henley,
Brogan Henley, Caitlin Buehner,
Chelsea Fowler, Chelsea Sherrill,
Cody Preston, Curtis Bounds,

HERDSMAN AWARD RECIPIENTS—The Hockley County
Junior Livestock Show board of directors sponsors the annual
Herdsman Awards which are presented at the annual sale. This year’s
awards went to the Whitharral 4-H. the Smyer FFA and Anton 4-H.

and junior shows, along with the
horse division, combine to make
the Houston Livestock show the

Almost 17,000 entries,
representing about 1,100 Texas
4-H clubs and FFA chapters, will
compete in this year’s junior
show. A wide variety of animals
will be shown in the junior
divisions of the livestock
competition, including market
steers, barrows, lambs, goals, and
poultry; beef and dairy heifers.
