PRODUCTION MILESTONE - The employees of United Cotton
Growers’ Arnett gin were presented a certificate of recognition and
treated to a pizza lunch this past Friday after they set a record for
producing the most cotton bales ever during one week: 7,740 bales.

Farm Credit Services; AgTexas CEO Mitchell Harris; Doug
Hoelscher, AgTexas vice president; gin superintendent Armando
Garza and gin employees Lupe anti Pete Mata (Staff Photo)
Oil Painting for Fun and
Voice for Fun remain open at
South Plains College.
The oil painting class will
meet in two sections beginning 7-
10 p.m. Monday (Jan. 31) and
Tuesday (Feb. I) in the Fine Arts
Building, Room 14. Cost is $75,
plus supplies, and instructor is
Marilyn Dewbre.
Voice for Fun, which begins
United Cotton Growers set a
record last week when the gin
processed the most cotton ever
ginned at the Arnett plant during
a seven-day period
On Jan. 21, at 7 a.m., gm
employees had produced 7,740
bales of cotton in one week.
AgTexas Farm Credit
Services recognized gin
employees by serving them pizza
and presenting them a certificate
of recognition this past Friday.
Mitchell Harris, chief execu-
tive officer with AgTexas Farm
Credit Services, praised the gin
and its employees for their
accomplishment
Hams said it is rare to see
companies accomplish their long-
term goals as well as UCG has.
“United Gm knew they had
employees that could perform
well if the resources were
provided and tiiey knew that high
production efficiency would
provide stronger dividends to the
customers." he said.
Doug Hoelscher, AgTexas
vice president, expressed his
appreciation to UCG's employees
and joined them for a pizza lunch
Paul Wilson, gin manager,
said the investment that the
company put into the gin is pay-
ing off.
“Reaching this
goal is further ev»
making a large investment in the
plant in 2004 was in the best
interest of the cooperative
members,” Wilson said.
The board and management
of UCG established a 7,000 bale
per week goal as a key indicator
of excellent performance as they
were planning the 2004 major re-
engineering of the plant, he said.
Wilson added that the perfor-
mance by gm employees was
exceptional.
By late last week, the gm had
produced more than 65,000 bales
of cotton.
UCG expects to end the
ginning season with a total
production run of more than
100,000 bales, which will be a
record.

South Plains Tech Prep
holding Job Shadow Day
South Plains Tech Prep is
coordinating its’ seventh annual
Groundhog Job Shadow Day
February 2. About 1,370juniors
from 47 high schools-throughout
the area will be spending the day
job shadowing a business
representative, About 425
businesses will be opening their
doors to these students and
sharing a typical day in their
business or industry, said Bill
Berset, Tech Prep project
director.
South Plains College will
host 84 students on the Levelland
campus and 16 students on the
Reese campus.
“Mentors and students all
benefit,” Berset believes.
Students receive hands-on
experience in the workplace,
which gives them a better
perspective on requirements for
jobs in their field. Students also
discover whether or not their
aptitudes, skills and interests line
up successfully with the career
they had in mind. Shadowing
also helps students understand
how their course work is applied
in the workplace, noted Berset.
Businesses benefit by
showcasing their business and
industry, as well as getting to
know their future workforce and
giving back to their community,
Berset added. Groundhog Job
Shadow Day has proven to be
very helpful to students exploring
and making decisions about
careers and educational
pathways.
“It is a great way to utilize
the expertise of our businesses
and college instructors,” she said.

Groundhog Job Shadow Day,

Center campus, 885-3048, ext.
