The Main Street Advisory
board welcomed new members
Thursday, elected officers and
discussed ongoing programs and
challenges.
The new members joining
the board for three-year terms
are John Hartin, Shanna Saunders
and John Booth.
Sandy Smith was elected
chairman and Dane Dewbre was
named vice chairman.
In discussing who might
serve on the organization’s four
committees, the board agreed that
more downtown merchants would
be ideal.
Mary Siders, president of the
Levelland Chamber of
Commerce/Mam Street Program,
said the Design Committee’s in-
volvement in such projects as city
hall landscaping, Gateway entries
and Lobo Lake Park is a strong
point for the community.
“There are mega
opportunities out there for us,"
Siders said. “There are lots of
things we’re going to be meeting
about."
She said the city's Main
Street Program lost points when it
was evaluated and named a
National Main Street City in
Texas in 2004, she said.
“We’ve got to get more
“We need to be thinking about
other members in the community
to do more along the lines of
preservation, she added,.”
The program also lost points
because some reports were late in
being submitted last year.
“We are required to do
certain things. There are areas we
have to work on,” Siders said.
“We have to do what’s best for
our city. The good thing is we’re
doing too much. My goal is to be
the top Main Street city in
Texas.”
Christi Sollis, Main Street
specialist, said half of the
downtown merchants appeared
pleased with the response by the
public during the three Christmas
on the Square celebrations last
month.
Some merchants said it might
be best to have the events on one
or two Thursday nights instead of
three, Sollis said.
Board member Shanna
Saunders, who owns Our Stuff,
said that many people rushed into
stores, signed up for drawings
and then left.
months of 2004.
A total of 251
buildings/properties/projects
worth $7,352,525 has been rein-
vested in the private sector in the
Main Street District since the
program started here in 1998.
Sollis said there has been
some response on the part of
South Plains College students
regarding a discount program.
The program offers SPC students
discounts at certain businesses.
She said that one in eight
retailers participating in the
program reported an increase in
back such activities as Las
Posadas.
Board members reviewed the
2004 Main Street reinvestment
summary.
The summary showed that
one private sector rehabilitation
project, for $5,000, was
undertaken in the Main Street
District in the last quarter of
2004. That was for the
remodeling of an attorney’s
office downtown.
The summary also showed
that four jobs were added in the
last quarter.
At the same time, seven
private sector buildings and/or
properties were sold for a total of
