THE STATE OF TEXAS
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
FIFTY-THIRD LEGISLATURE
REUBEN E. SENTERFITT, SPEAKER
AUSTIN, TEXAS
Dear Friend:
I received a petition with your signature attached which
asked me to support House Bill 216 that would give the teachers
an additional six hundred dollars per year.
If this measure passes as it now stands, it would cost the
tax payers of our State an additional seventy million dollars in
the next two years. Our general appropriations bill for the
next two years will be approximately one hundred sixty-two
million dollars.
Contrary to the thoughts of some people any sort of tax
which we levy would eventually be paid by you the consumer.
If you as a tax payer realize that this proposed salary increase
fcr teachers would mean additional taxes, and are still in favor
of the raise, then certainly I would support the measure.
Your interest and confidence is sincerely appreciated.
When other matters come before the Legislature in which you
are interested, I would appreciate you taking the time to
express your feelings on these matters to me.
V ry truly yours
ruett Latimer

The Bible states that the laborer is wortuof hi hire.
Today, I paid a man twenty dollars for fo or in

going to quit teaching because he could make a hundred
dollars a week painting houses, against fifty teaching
boys anA girls. Most of the other forty eight states
with the exception of a few states pay their teachers a
living wage. Would Texas rather have federal control
and a federal subsidy, or do our Texas children have to
pay the penalty of inferior education, because we can't
