THANKS
r.GIVING
Dear John, SQUARE December 27, 1974
The note on the size of glass from Philip Johnson reads as follows-
"He is quite right that we should use three-eighth inch glass or the
English equivalent of 10 millimetre. The dimensions are slightly off.
The visible plate of glass according to the working drawings is 6' -
2 1/2 x 6 - 11". The actual therefore willbe 6 - 3/4"x 6 - 11 1/2". "
The size of the Dove in relation to the white space around it has been
studied on a 22 foot wall in relation to the width of the doorway and the
size of the door, Dove and top panel.
Knowing that your sense is far better than ours, it would seem that a
Dove wingspread of about four feet would be good. Too small is merely
an emblem and toolarge itbecomes somewhat of a menace or a bird of
prey. The ideal would be as a presence with sufficient freedom and air
space as represented by the clear glass.
Trying to bear in mind all of your good advice about the way it would
appear, we thought the above experiment was worthwhile to test the
scale full size from a distance and up close as a person would approach.
Yours, of course, is the expert judgment. Please let us know any
thoughts you have.
The whole concept is getting much more meaningful as we get closer to
construction. I am attaching some photographs taken from my office
window on a cloudy day.
Construction is well along on the truck terminal floor and they are
starting on the roof of it which will provide the base for our Garden
and Chapel. Steady progress is being made.
Best regards to the family.
Sincerely,
THANKS-GIVING SQUARE FOUNDATION
