IMPERIAL SUGAR COMPANY SA R w, TEXAS October 5, 1960 Mr. Walter F. Woodul 615 Capitol National Bank Building Austin 16, Texas Dear Walter: While you are still hot on the subject I will try to answer some of your questions, namely the average yield per acre is 13-5/10 tons of sugar beets. The beets contain 17% sugar, therefore you can expect approximately 2-1/4 tons of sugar per acre. Apparently there are 1, 200 acres of beets grown in the Texas Panhandle and these beets are shipped to Rocky Ford, Colorado for the Ame rican Crystal Company. We know definitely that this arrangement is not very profitable freight wise ,for either the farmers or the beet sugar processors. We don't know, and I doubt if we can find out, how much freight is absorbed by either party. I have in my library a book entitled "Beet Sugar Economics", by R. H. Cottrell. I find it very valuable at the present time for information concerning the beet sugar industry. With kindest personal regards, I am Since sly, WHL:jms cc: Mr. I. H. Kem
