Whiteface boys basketball
coach Carlton Henderson knew he
was going to have a successful
tournament four days before it
began
"We had ordered T-shirts for all
the players,’' he said. "Wednesday,
we had to call and double our
order "
Henderson was one of the
organizers of the Whileface Three
On-Three tournament, which Kx)k
place Saturday at the Whiteface
High School gym and drew in 44
teams
"We just had three learns in the
junior high girls division but we
had al least 10 teams in every oilier
division,'" Henderson said
Approximately 140 players
came to Whiteface Saturday for the
tournament, which drew about
double what Henderson had
originally llxiught
I read about the one at Fourth
On Broadway (July 4 in Lubbock)
having about 30 teams, so 1 thought
we might have 20," lie said One ol
the main purposes of lite tourney
was not to have a big turn-out, but
give tile junior high age players a
chance to compete
"There’s just no place lor them
to play," Henderson said.
The tournament had originally
been scheduled for Saturday and
Sunday, but after conferring with
those signing up. Henderson said
the decision was made to play all of
the games on Saturday, with a few
on Friday night.
"It went quicker than I thought,"
he -aid "We were done by 1:30
p.m Saturday."
Tile tournament was cons-
tructed similarly to oilier three-on-
three tournaments, such as the
Hoop-It-Up and lite Fourth On
Broadway tourney, with die excep-
tion that it was played inside the
gym, instead of the street
"We had six courts to play on
Henderson said We kept them
full all tire time
"There was a lot ot basketball
played"
Play was divided into five
divisions: junior high girls, junior
high boys, high school girls, high
school boys and an open men’s
division. The divisions also held
for the free-throw and three-point
shooting contests.
