Reader resents apathy over sand pit
EdMar, SmA Bait LmBbt:
Your layout about the sand pits was
very well done. 1 only hope something
can be done before there to another
tragedy. 1 think apathy will take over,
though. It to net a nuclear waste dump,

Solutions to sand pit
Dear Ma. Stafford:
I am glad you have been thinking
about the problem of the "Sand Pits of
Paradise.” Unfortunately, 1 was sad to
see only one response, even if my idea
is considered to be "dumb" by you. 1
think you could have sent your ides to
this paper without inferring “dumb-
ness.” I deeply resent that.
As for a duck pond, that would be a
great idea. How deep is a duck pond?
How long would It take? How much
would It cost to fill in, or dredge the
lOO'-plus deep holes that are there? 1
still say, landfills can be successful and
expedite the cessation of swimming in
water that is not desirable because the
potential swimmers would not relish the
idea of swimming in garbage.
for the people who have lost sons so far
at that terrible place, almost ss I do for
my situstion.
We are leaving soon, but I sincerely
hope the residents will be interested
enough to demand a solution.
Beverly Souea
not ‘dumb9
As for the city of Houston, the parks
department can’t even keep the Beverly
Hills Pool in good running order. I wish
1 had kept track of the days it has closed
so far this year.
Any ideas to solve this problem the
quickest, cheapest and most satisfac-
tory way would certainly be welcomed
by the people who are concerned. When
my idea, sincerely expressed, is called
“dumb" it is just another rip in a heart
which is having a very hard time heal-
ing. No person submitting an idea
should be considered "dumb” even if
the idea may not be feasible.
I will be interested to hear how long
this matter will take to be forgotten.

Softball Association gets thanks
Editor, South Belt Loader:
We would like to express to the
Sagemont-Beverly Hills Softball As-
sociation Board of Directors our compli-
ments for an outstanding job well done
this season.
We are aware that they have devoted
much of their time and effort to this job
to make it a good season for the people
that really count - the girls! But we
coaches understand the many hours
spent prior to softball season that were
necessary for organization, ground
rules, fund raising, etc. and we person-
ally appreciate that.
We know you have been personally
praised but we would like to thank you
“in front" of the community by this
note in the South Belt Leader.

Fire hydrant pranks not harmless
large amounts of water to fire depart-
ment pumpers to extinguish fires. If
more than one or two are open, the
water pressure in the remaining parts
of the community is nothing. This
“harmless prank” could have caused
the needless loss of life and property for
some families in this community.
Fire hydrants are flushed from time
to time by the water department during
daylight hours. Anyone opening them
after dark should be reported to the Fire
Department at 481-1110 or the Sheriff’s
Department at 221-6000 with license
numbers and description of persons
involved. The home you save may be
your own.
Stephen S. Gaskins
Fire Chief
Southeast Volunteer Fire Department
Editor, South Belt Leader:
Early Monday morning, the South-
east Volunteer Fire Department and
several concerned local residents spent
several hours turning off numerous fire
hydrants opened by some irresponsible
individuals in our community. I am
sure these ''individuals'' thought that
this was a harmless prank that was a
neat thing to do and that the only thing
lost was a few hundred dollars worth of
water that the residents of this com-
munity would have to pay for. Un-
fortunately, if anyone’s house should
have caught on fire during the time that
these fire hydrants were open, there
would not have been any water avail-
able to extinguish their home.

Caraway
to support
state park
funding
State Rep. Bill Caraway
has written the Texas
Parks and Wildlife Com-
mission in support of state
funding for proposed park
sites in Southeast Harris
County.
“During the past legis-
lative session I co-spon-
sored HB 233, which made
state cigarette tax reve-
nues available for the pur-
chase of recreational space
in urban areas,” Caraway
said. "There is a serious
shortage of park space in
the Greater Houston area.
For example, the city of
Dallas, with fewer people
and a smaller land area,
has almost twice the park
acreage of the city of
Houston and Harris Coun-
ty combined," he said.
Three sites in the South-
east Harris County/Bay
Area have been nominated
for state funding: on Gal-
veston Bay near Seabrook;
adjacent to an existing
park on Armand Bayou;
and on Clear Creek near
Friendswood.
