science competition and has
participated In band for seven
years.
Over 6,500 students were
nominated last February by
their English teachers for
NCTE Achievement Awards In
Writing. Each nominee sub-
mitted a sample of his/her
best writing and an impromptu
essay. These compositions
were evaluated by state judg-
ing teams of both high school
and college English teachers.
The approximately 850 final-
ists selected each year repre-
sent high schools In all 50
states, the District of Colum-
bia, and American schools
abroad. The number of pos-
sible winners for each state
Is keyed to state population.
The Council recommends
the award finalists, now sen-
iors, for college scholarships
in 1976, should they need such
assistance. Names of the stu-
dents are sent to admissions
officers and English depart-
ment chairmen at U.S. two-
and four-year colleges and
universities.
Joel David West of J. Frank
Dobie High School has been
cited for outstanding perform-
ance In writing. The National
Council of Teachers of Eng-
lish has named him a finalist
of a 1976 NCTE Achievement
Award in Writing. The NCTE
writing contest is held an-
nually beginning in January.
Joel is the son of Mr. and
Mrs. Harvey Lee West of
Sagehollow. He Is a National
Merit Semi Finalist and has
received three first places
In Roman History state com-
petition and a third place at
national. Joel Is captain of
the Prep Bowl and an active
member of the junior Classi-
cal League, Science Seminar,
JETS, and Komputer Kore.

standing game.
They did - not allow the
Destroyers one shot at the
goal in the entire game. In
spite of many opportunities,
the Spurs offense was not able
to push In a score. However,
they moved the ball well and
controlled much of the game.

The Kirkwood Spurs defeat-
ed the Seabrook Rockets 4-0,

Fortorney. Scott Allen played
a beautiful defensive game
while Douglas Lonldler, White
and Fortomy all passed well.
Matthen Erickson played
very good positioning. Jacob-

good as middle fielders.

HISTORY STUDENTS AT THOMPSON INTERMEDIATE
SPENT 5 DAYS CONSTRUCTING A 30 FOOT MURAL
WITH THE THEME ‘'MARCHING TOWARD REVOLU-
TION". STUDENTS IN ONE OF DENISE REED’A CLASSES
CAME UP WITH 10 MAIN EVENTS THAT LED TO THE
TEXAS REVOLUTION THROUGH THE BATTLE OF SAN
JACINTO. THEY WERE: MEXICAN LAWS OF APRIL
6, 1830; SANTA ANNA BECOMES A DICTATOR, BATTLE
OF GONZALES, CAPTURE OF SAN ANTONIO, DEC-
LARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, FALL OF THE ALAMO,
RUNAWAY SCRAPE, GOLIAD MASSACRE AND THE
BATTLE OF SAN JACINTO. THE STUDENTS INCOR-
PORATED IMPORTANT FACTS AND CREATIVE PIC-

team defeated the Friends-
wood Bulllts 8-0 with goals
scored as follows: three by
Terri Moreno; two by Tracy
Hogue, and one each by
Michelle Hicks, and Kathy
Shapley. Various assists were
made by Susam Burgdorf.
Karen Lopez and Leslie
Savage maintained the
field and had almost
control of the ball.

The Sagemont Spurs Soccer
teams began their 1976 season
with 10 wins, 6 losses, one
tie, and two games called
by referees due to rain.
The Sagemont Spurs, In
their third year of organiza-
tion, have seventeen teams
for both boys and girls, ages
6-17.
The Cullen Savings Spurs
defeated the Seabrook Jet
Stars 6-1, In their opening
game. Fancy footwork by
Tommy Botas with three goals
and Carlos Botas with 1 goal
led the assault. McKay King
and Ian Waters each added
1 goal.
Peter Sidwell had a fantas-
tic day with 3 assists as he
set up Spur scoring opportu-
nities. Carlos Botas and
Waters each got an assist.
Outstanding defensive play
by Darrin Richter, Lee Hamil-
ton, Gary Settle, Paul Brown
and Lee Jenkins kept the ball
on the Spurs offensive end of
the field for the majority of
the game.
John Evans and Mark Baug-
ham took control mid-field
and gave the Jet Stars few
scoring opportunities.
When the Jets did get close,
Scott Evans
man closed
lead the attack with four and
three goals respectively. Gary
Blrslnger added the last
score.
The Spurs defense did a
fine job keeping the ball up
the field for the high-scoring
offense...Other Spurs players
are Randy Asbury, Colin
Dailey, Chris Haschke, Baron
Jones, Mike Krafka, Mark
Lindsay, James Ragan,
Geoffrey Small, David Vargo,
Chris Willburn, Matt Will-
burn, and Jimmy Yu.
The Sagemont Jack-ln-the-
Box Spurs (10-11 year old boys)
and the LaPorte Destroyers
played to a scoreless tie Sun-
day December 5 In LaPorte.
It was a well-played game on
The Flexltalllc Spurs were
also victorious In their game
which was played against the
Deer Park Yankees. The Spurs
shutout the Yankees 7-0. Of-
fense for the Spurs was led
by Chris Glenn who scored
three goals, Derek Munz who
scored two and Marco
Helguero and Jim Johnson who
had one a piece.
Scores were aided by Tom-
my Gentry, Jason Mendell and
Larry Hamilton. The defense
did a fine job, with Matt Wingo
and Rusty Kuehn who served
as goalie. Enforcing the de-
fensive team were: Scott Ben-
nett, Randall Ashlock, Carlos
Carvajal, Mike Crawford,
Sean Malone, Benny Patter-
son and Fred Schultz.
The Sagemont Jarrell
Plumbing Spurs (8-9 year old
boys) defeated the Baytown
Saints in a lopsided 8-1 game.
In a great team effort the
Spurs completely outclassed
the young Baytown team. John
