Io what extent has the rising cost of
living affected residents of Panolu
County’’
Have incomes in the local area in
creased fast enough in the last few y ears
to enable the average family to absorb
the higher cost and have something
additional left over ’
Prior to the last year or two. most
families, locally and elsewhere were
able to keep ahead ot the game because
their earning were rising more rapidly
than their costs More recently however
with galloping inflation, many have been
tailing behind
66 and 656 over 66
They represeni 25 2 per cent of the
over 16 population Elsewhere across the
country the average is 14 9 percent
For the most part they are people who
have a source of income or who have
acquired sufficient resources or financial
tucking to enable them to not work often
al a comparatively early age
Although there are many among them
who are unable to work because of
physical or mer 1 conditions and
although there at me shirkers who
rely upon the rest of society to provide for
them lhe great majority are quite dif
ferent
Because their funds are adequate lor
lheir needs they don t have to work and
they don t choose to do so
Throughout lhe United Slates as a
whole, the total in lhe non work non
school category is close to 10 million the
Commerce Department reports It
compares with 6.bno oui in i960 More
than tialf of them are 66 or older
In Panola County , some 21 3 per cent of
the male jxipulation over 65 are still in
lhe lalxir force Nationally, the figures
show 24 H per cent remain on the active
rolls
What keeps lhe others going Iman
cially? Outside of savings interest
private pensions, dividends and other
income front investments, their chief
source of funds is government Transfer
payments "
These include social security, unem
ploymenl insurance, welfare and
veterans benefits
During lhe past year, when personal
income in the United States amounted Io
i'.nt, billion no less than $104 billion of it
came from transfer payments according
to the Commerce Department
(’hiefly because of these payments,
retirement has become feasible for more
and more people As a result, the
proportion of non workers to workers has
lieen rising
A study by lhe lax Foundation a non
profit research organization shows what
has lieen happening to people s buying
power
Because of taxes and inflation it
stales pay increases of up to 35 percent
in the last seven years fall short of giving
a family the same purchasing power it
had with lhe smaller 1966 income ” Those
with bigger increases however ended up
even or better
In other words the cost of living has
gone up more than 35 percent putting a
squeeze on many family poc ketbool'.

raises he may have received since then”
The figures show that nut only have his
raises been erased by the tax inflation
combination, but his alter tax pay today
is worth about $390 less than it was seven
years ago
For the married man who made IIO.tMHi

Security lax rose $355 Inflation caused
an additional loss ot $3,016
Thus. Ins expenses rose $3 966 in seven
years and his income only $3 mki which
left him $466 short of the break even
point
uther calculations based upon lhe
general figures contained in the report
indicate that a Panola County man who
had a $5.otxi income in 1966 which rose to
$6 750 in 1973 ended up with a net loss of
$140 and that the one who had a 1966 in
