The Williamson County Sym-
phony Orchestra helped Fort Hood
community members welcome in
the holiday season with a free con-
cert Saturday night in the Howze
Auditorium.
The theme of this year’s concert,
the 10th straight year the orches-
tra has performed for Fort Hood’s
troops and Families, was “The
Beauty of Christmas,” which fea-
tured a variety of holiday tunes.
Latin-style number and performed
by the orchestra’s string ensemble.
Other number’s included an origi-
nal composition by Dr. M. L. Dan-
iels’ “Santa Falls from the Housetop”
and the more traditional “Hallelujah
Chorus,” taken from George Frideric
Handel’s “The Messiah.”
Many in the audience in the nearly
filled auditorium appreciated the
orchestra’s performance.
“This is great,” Sgt. Julie Carmona
of Fort Hood’s Dental Activity said
prior to the program as her 2-year-
old daughter, Madison, watched the
musicians intently. “We always have
music (playing) in our house over
the holidays.”
Carmona, whose husband Julio, a
sergeant first class with the 1 st Medi-
cal Brigade, was also in attendance at
Saturday’s concert, said she’s more
of a traditionalist when it comes to
holiday music.
“Definitely traditional,” she added.
For Rainey and the WCSO mem-
bers, tradition brings them back to
Fort Hood every year, and in keep-
ing the spirit of the event light-heart-
ed, the orchestra leader always offers
up his baton to a guest conductor.
This year, that guest conductor
was Command Sgt. Maj. Michael
Gosper, command sergeant major of

Rainey has been the orchestra’s
director of music since its found-
ing in 2002. He said he remem-
bers a decade ago when the orches-
tra’s board decided to “adopt Fort
Hood.”
“It’s a blessing for us,” Rainey
said. “I remember the first time con-
ducting here, and I saw that huge
(American) flag (that serves as a
backdrop to the stage). Just knowing
what it stands for, and what it means
to the troops and Families behind
me ... I felt tears in my eyes.”

“The nerves are pretty up there,
Gosper said prior to the perfor-
mance. “They just told me about it
(having to take the stage and be a
part of the concert).”
After having some fun at Gosper’s
expense while he instructed the
senior noncommissioned officer on
the ins and outs of conducting an
orchestra, Rainey passed on the con-
ducting baton and Gosper led the
group in the holiday classic “Sleigh
Ride.”
“Our primary reason for coming
to Fort Hood to perform is that
we consider the Soldiers and their
Families our heroes,” said WCSO
music director and conductor Dr.
Thomas “Doc” Rainey. “We like to
present music that brings hope ...
and something special to all ages at
Christmas time.”
The orchestra opened their
10-tune concert with “Christmas
Eve/Sarajevo 12/24,” featuring gui-
tarist Robert Hoff. The third song of
the set was “Hark the Herald Angels
Sing” rearranged by Rainey into a
