A mound of loose dirt covering a
six-foot deep pit in the 100 block
West McLendon Street and two rup
tured hydrogen cyanide cylinders
are reminders of an exciting, and
sometimes confuting, night in
Stamford.
The episode left the citizenry
wiser in handling of such an
emergency without injury. There
was some damage to property, a
small price to pay for the
experience gained and the hazard
removed.
Considering what was accorpp
lished and the minimal ill effects,
the night will basically go down as a
success story despite a variety of
minor inconveniences and kinks.
Lynn Caton, manager of Jones
Haskell Coop, location .of the
cylinders and the subsequent
explosions, was asked Sunday
following a review of the series
events leading up to the detonations
.whether he would have changed
- anything.
He admitted that hindsight is
better than foresight but felt he
would follow much the same pro
cedure that he took following his '
discovery of a potentially
dangerous situation.
One major flaw in the removal of
'the cylinders, he said, was the “on
again, off again" evacuation of por
tions of Stamford. Caton said it was
very unfortunate that the evacua
tions were halted at one point and
later started anew.
He said that some final approval
was needed for the detonation when
the first evacuation was ordered It
was hoped that the approvals would
be Obtained at about •ffiesairie"Hme
that ~ the evacuations were
completed.

Although everybody

Mengden. Houston Repub-
lican, announced he will
strongly oppose any
attempt in the Texas
Legislature to ratify the
proposed amendment to
U. S. Constitution to
give Washington, D C..
two U. S. Senators.
“I am shocked and
appalled that two-thirds of
the members of the U S.
Congress would vote for
.aomething so incredibly
stupid,” hie said. s
“To give the city of
Washington, D. C., two ..the Senate, during the
voting U.S. senators — the
exact same representa-
tion the entire state of
Texas has in the Senate —
is utter insanity.” the out-
spoken senator said.
“Washington. D. C. is not a
state, it is a city. If it needs
representation in the U. S
Senate, then the people
should be allowed to vote
for the U. S. senators from
Virginia, but not have two
all their own." Mengden

Stamford gains experience,
gets rid of potential hazard
situation with a minimum of
confusion and the job done in a ~
hurry. However, when it became
apparent that more time was
needed for final approval, the
evacuation was stopped and the
entire project almost scrubbed for
the day.
The general feeling of those in-
volved was that the project needed
to be disposed of that day and
efforts were renewed to obtain
approval. Once that was obtained,
it was full speed ahead.
Caton said the complexity of the
disposal problem and the number of
agencies involved contributed to
the delimma All were concerned"
with the well being of the town and
all wanted the cylinders
eliminated But none had personal
experience in handling the situa-
tion
The chemical company had dis
posed of aged cylinders before but
never in the middle of tpwn. The
Army had detonated explosives
before but never in urban
surroundings.
Law enforcement officials have
handled traffic control previously
but Friday was probably the first *
attempt to evacuate Stamford since
the town was founded in 1900
Considering,the "on the job train-
ing" that the Friday episode en
tailed. Stamford didn't do too bad
True, there were a few people who
entered the evacuated area before
they were supposed to — some by-
accident and some by oversight
But as one observer noted. "No
•one was killed "
And that is a measure of success
that can't be beat The problem was
resolved and a world of experience
was accumulated
