I recall my very first assignment after Army basic
training. I was assigned to Kelly Barracks in Stutt-
gart, Gennany. I arrived at the barracks that I would
call home for the next two years during in the eve-
ning. I walked into the barracks, put my bags down
and looked around at my new surroundings. The
first words I heard were “Hey we got us a nigger
here”. Other expletives followed. There was no
letup in the next few months. Racial relations have
improved tremendously since the early 60’s. If you
have never experienced this atmosphere, you don’t
want to ever be in such a situation. Presidential
candidates can act the part of a fool. We don’t have
to join them.
We are starting a campaign for respect and dig-
nity. I think we Mexican-Americans take things
for granted. If you look around things look great.
American is the land of milk and honey. Thanks to
our history we have not learned our history which
is totally separated from the east coast. Along the
way, our history merged with American history
and we are writing a new history book. Texas is
moving forward. And we Americans of Mexican
descent had a lot to do with this movement. At this
point the only thing we can say is “Adelante”.
We went to Trimble Tech and listened to some
seniors talk local politics. We were certainly
impressed with the quality of their discussion and
ability to grasp issues and discuss them intelligent-
not get it but what we got
were some very passionate
students ready to make their
mark on society. Again, we
say “Adelante’.
You probably have heard the
song The Impossible Dream
from Man of La Mancha.
We admire Lee Trevino,
who dropped out of school,
joined the Marines and
learned how to play golf and
made his mark m the game.
A Mexican-American in the
golf hall of fame. Adelante,
we need more in all sports.
Successes have been many.
But we still have a long way
to go. And if we go out and
vote, we will have arrived.
