He was first arrested in Tulsa, Okla.,
when he was 20, and was fined $19 for
a misdemeanor. He next was arrest-
ed for a Lincoln County (Oklahoma)
bank robbery, but was released from
the penitentiary after serving only
six months. He was arrested in Tulsa
on a burglary charge in 1932. He
was released on bond and the case is
pending.
The Federal reward for his arrest,
posted recently, was for his alleged
participation in the Bremer kidnap-

LAST OF KARPIS GANG
CAPTURED IN G-MEN RAID
'St. Paul, Minn., May 7.—Harry
Campbell, 86, last of the} Karpis-
Bsrker gapg of kidnapers and killers
Barker gang until it was on its last
legs. He was implicated in the Brem-
er kidnaping, however. His chief
claim to notoriety rests on a shooting
fray in Atlantic City in January, 1936,
when he and Karpis shot their way
out of a hotel in which they had been
co rnered by police.

Campbell is under indictment only
for the Bremer abduction.
The transport plane carrying Camp-

and taxied into an army hangar. The
prisoner, wearing leg irons and hand-
cuffed to a Federal agent, was hust-
led into an automobile and taken im-
mediately to the department of jus-
tice offices.
.‘‘Is karpis going to get the $2,500
reward for Campbell's capture?’’ a
Federal agent was' asked.
i “Well,” was the reply,

Hoover said, however, that no one
would get the reward. He said Fed-

"We are Federal men and we are

They beat on the door again and
it was opened. There was a short
scuffle and Campbell was led out, his

Hoo-
ver said he believed she married
Campbell as Bob Miller, did not know
he was a desperate criminal, and had
herself committed no crimes.
Hoover said Campbell had been liv-
ing in Toledo five months, or almost
constantly since the Garrettsville,
Ohio, mail robbery which he and Kar-
pis allegedly directed last Novem-
ber He had been in and out of To-
ledo for a year and a half. • ,
Hoover disclosed that most of th^
members of the Karpis-Barker gang
still at liberty at that time spent the
summer of 1934 in Cleveland. He
said they were tipped off by “crooked
Cleveland politicians with police con-
nections” that a Federal raid was
planned and fled.
A few minutes after Campbell and
his wife were taken, the Federal men
captured Sam Coker, on parole from
the Oklahoma State penitentiary
where he was serving a thirty-year
term for bank robbery. He was an
associate of Karpis. He was held at
Cleveland, pending return to Okla-
homa as a parole violator.
Coker, 40, came from Nowata, Okla.
He was living in Toledo with an aged
couple who, Federal agents learned
prior to the raid, suffer from heart
trouble. Extreme precaution was ta-
ken'by the Federal men^vhen Coker
was taken, so as not to excite the
,old people..
The building in which Campbell was
taken was a two-story structure with
a delicatessen on the ground floor..
Campbell had a front apartment.
His criminal record dates back to

on his henchman's hiding place. Camp-
bell had been living in Toledo as Bob
Miller, with his bride. Gertrude, who
married him a year algo without
knowing his true identity.
Hoover said Karpis and Campbell
were the two who guarded Edward
Bremer, St. Paul banker, while he
captive after being kidnap-
»is ia under indictment for4 for questioning in Cleveland.
