INTER-OFFICE LETTER
FOR MR. I. H. Kempner, III DATE May 7, 1971
SUBJECT Aromatics 4-70 2M A-32929
WRITE ON BUT ONE SUBJECT TO BE USED BY ALL OFFICERS OR DEPARTMENT
ON THIS SHEET HEADS FOR INTER-OFFICE CORRESPONDENCE
Lonnie Pope called and states that he is developing an anti-clouding agent
for Coke. Other people are working on this but he feels he has the inside
track because he is the only one thus far to apply for FDA approval on
one of the essential ingredients, some kind of vegetable oil.
Also, he has asked them to consider him as a source of supply for some
of their secret ingredients. These ingredients are purchased by Don
Leslie and Sam McGruder. Leslie and McGruder told Lonnie that they
did not buy these particular ingredients from publicly held companies.
They felt these ingredients are so confidential that the secret can be
better kept by small, independent companies. When one of their suppliers
goes public or is bought out by a public company, they immediately cancel
them out and look for another independent. They told Lonnie he had the
type of company they like to encourage to become a supplier of some of
these ingredients and would have a serious interest in their development.
Leslie was much impressed when he found out Imperial owned 25% of
Aromatics' stock; he did not ask and Lonnie did not volunteer the history
of the Imperial-Aromatics relationship. Aromatics is already working
on the development of one or two of the items they discussed and have a
source of supply for some of the necessary ingredients on Avery Island.
Lonnie says sales for May so far is $26, 000, volume is growing and he
expects to make a profit in May and June.
