1974. The sales price received for consumer sugar was less than the
sales price received for industrial sugar in March 1975. This is an
unusual situation and was caused by the high sales price received for
tolled industrial sugars. Statistics on sales for the month of March
1975 are presented next.
7 of Cwt. Price Gross Sales
Shipment Shipped Per Cwt. Amount
Consumer - Private Label 21.5% 48 890 $35.7294 $1 746 808
Consumer - Other 78.5 178 227 37.2109 6 631 994
100.0% 227 117 $36.8920 $8 378 802
Industrial Sugar + Toll 25.9% 96 860 $46.9445 $ 4 547 047
Industrial Sugar 74.1 277 523 35.2636 9 786 447
100.0% 374 383 $38.2857 $14 333 494
The spread between consumer private label and Imperial consumer sales
price was greater in March 1975 than in February 1975 and the private
label shipments were 21.5% of total consumer shipments in March 1975
compared to 19.2% in February 1975 and 24.3% in March 1974. Due to
higher priced raw sugar contracted for, tolled industrial sugars in
March 1975 were again priced higher than Imperial's industrial sugars.
The higher priced tolled industrial sugars caused the average sales
price received for industrial sugars in March 1975 to be higher than
the average sales price received for consumer sugars.
Sales deductions increased $.3628 per cwt. over February 1975. An
increase in claims & allowances of $.3218 per cwt. over February 1975
was caused by a price decline of $172,640.
Cost of Sales
Cost of sales decreased $1.0362 per cwt. from February 1975.. This
decrease was less than the decrease in the net sales price received,
resulting in a $5.2423 per cwt. decrease in the contribution margin,
Inventories at 3/31/75 were only slig-.- y lower than the inventories
at 2/28/75 in terms of lbs. An analysis of the LIFO inventory layers
at 2/28/75 and 3/31/75 is presented next.
