While there are those who object
to integration, even on the small
scale seen in Hereford, we are
fortunate in that the problem is
not so complex as it will be in
Dallas, Ft. Worth and many East

if we will ever use the National

When it comes to topices for
conversation, football and Arkan-
sas integration seem to be about
a draw in these parts. If anything,
football might hold a little edge.
Which reminds me, there is a
little magazine called THE FORE-
RUNNER, published in Amarillo
each month; this week it featured
Deaf Smith County and Hereford.
They, went clear back to the days
of “Tater Joe,” who grew a bum-
per crop of spuds in Hereford
while everyone was .telling him
“it couldn't be done.” The article
also adds:
“Today Hereford, in harvest
time, receives more than S,000
phones calls each day from pro-
duce buyers all over the nation
— shipping out hundreds of car-
loads of potatoes, onions, cab-
bage, beets, tomatoes, beans,

PAYMENT DEFERRED
DENVER, Colo. — Colorado
State Treasurer Homer Bedford
received an unexpected check for
$100 recently. The check came
from John Curtis Wood of Ches-
terton, Ind., one of 1,017 World
War I doughboys who borrowed up
to $200 each as educational loans
from the state in 1919. Bedord said
it was the first time in almost 20
years Colorado had received any
payments on the loans. 859 of
which are still outstanding.

FOOTBALL is with
oral months to come,
that Coach Jack Harris will come
out with a fighting team. He is
bucking a lot of odds this year
and cannot be expected to turn out
any district champions but I
figure that everyone who manages
to outscore the Whitefaces
definitely be talking about
"fighting Hereford team.”

La Allegro Club is putting out
a special desk diary, along with
merchant ads and if the gadget
is half as good as their ad sales-
men, it should be about the best
investment any merchant ever
made. Mrs. John Douglas Pitman,
Mrs. Bill Dameron and Mrs. Wal-
ter London Jr. seem to have been
the ones I observed in action most.
I offered all three of them a job
in the advertising department, but
they are not interested. If we had
those three gals around The Brand
office, Melvin and I could drink
coffee 100 percent of the time —
instead of our usual 85 percent.

Dr. Adams, contrary to anything
you may have read in the Bull
column, is a gentleman and a scho-
lar. He came trooping in the other
day with six of the biggest, finest
looking peaches in Deaf Smith
County. They actually do look like
a photograph from one of those
seed magazines. I accused him of
importing them from California,
but he really did produce them at
his home south of town. I went
out and looked at the tree. I al-
ways hate to apologize,

Kenneth Coker gained a
tie the other day, when

Newsom was showing slides taken
on her recent trip to Europe, as-

projector. Francis was running the
slides through pretty fast in an ef-
fort to complete the program on
schedule and, during a reloading
interlude, asked:
“Am I going too fast.”
Before Jane could answer.
Coker chimed in: “Are those

is one of Faubus’ staunchest back-

also served to point up the inte-

problem is nothing, of course, com-
